Death By Sub

Hello,
Can anyone tell me if the parcel shelf contributes towards the strength of the car.
What i mean is, if I cut large bits out of it to fit sub's etc, would it compromise the cars strength?

I think its actually a metal rear shelf, covered in a pressed card section.
Personally i wouldnt cut lumps out of it as it may be structural. im sure someone will give you a definate yes/no answer

Yep.
There is an oval paned that you can take our behind the rear seats, the so called ski hatch thats just tacked in other than that I would do any more

Yep metal shelf! - i discovered it when dropping new 3 -ways into the shelf - that was annoying!! - As for the oval in the back panel, cool didnt notice it when i was behind the back rest running some cables... I'll have a look again 2moro! That'll come in handy!
I didnt cut out the metal shelf as i assumed it was done like that for a good reason!!

i asked a same question a while back in order to get extra battery access.... answer was no.. loads of reasons... do a search for me being the author

I used to run a 12" sub and it helped a lot

I boosted mine by inserting some thick mdf between the shelf and the speakers.
I did think about doing that but the chavs in the area put me off - i didnt wana put them on display more than neccessary!!

When I had my sub and 6X9's & amp the rear view mirror was useless as it vibrated so much

Only reason Ali got tyhe answer of no was because he wanted to use his man thong to hold the sub in place.
All jokes a side it can be done but u would have to re-enforce the shelf with bracing as that is part of the car structure, I have seen it cause problems in the ride of the car etc by removing rear sections of metal work.
I would say leave well alone if ur think about cutting it up

Put your 10" in the boot, punch out the center ski hatch and see how it sounds. I think you could port the sub through the rear shelf with some trumpets but you need to talk to someone who knows more bout ICE than me

the best way is to boot out the hatch and face the sub into the car, sound qualityis better and when people lift down the armrest the sound is better. all depends on what sub and amp you're running mate?

im not 100% but if you cut to much out it can class the car as a cat d right off as it is a main sructual piece of the car, if i were you i would lose the ski hatch and build your sub box with a funnel type front on it and seal it to the back seat pannel by the ski hatch, the sound should then punch through, good luck

I angled my 12" sub in the rear corner of the boot to cornerload it, sounded awsome.
I would really like to build an isobaric box and wire the speakers out of faze. But been years since I have tried to installe any type of system and even my old system is tame these days.
2 ways - kick panels
tweeters - hight in doors
3 ways (6X9) - rear shelf
12" sub boot
300W amp (150rms)
Kenwood head unit powered the front speaker and the sub did the 6X9's & sub

i recon that the previous owner of the my new Is took this hatch out which is why i am getting more road noise
these forums are a great help for someone like myself who does not know a lot about cars
