E30 Zone

Well I got the 1.8 M40 out of the touring last weekend and was just really deciding on what to do with it. I do have a chance of another 3.0ltr S50 from an E36 M3, but that maybe a month or two down the line yet, if it happens at all.

So I was stuck with an engine-less touring and it turns out I desperately need a car for next week, so......

And to answer the question, yes you can remove engine, box and front section of the prop all in one go.

And as of earlier this evening....




Started with an empty engine bay this morning, changed the cambelt on the 2.5 M20 (god I hope I did that right ), had a fight with the exhaust manifold studs , changed the sump gasket, new clutch, 1.9 Z3 lever and a few other bits.

Finished about 8pm this evening, all finished and ready to drive tomorrow

Hard days work then

Just a bit. May of overdone the work a little what with the whole broken fingers episode

Ah well - it felt good driving a 6pot again
Took it for a quick spin up the road and it all went well - got a few funny looks as I hadnt fitted the bonnet back on, but hey I wanted to keep an eye on things officer

I just need a 6cyl coding plug for the rev counter - if anyone has one please PM me

TBH, its dead easy really.

The M40 came out last weekend and once Id decided to split the prop in the centre that only took maybe 2-2.5 hours. My brother took the diff out for me on Tuesday cause I couldnt undo the top bolts with my knackered hand and then the M20 went in today.

The cambelt took no time at all because the engine was on the floor (I would hate to do one in the car ) and the clutch was just as easy. Bolted the gearbox to the engine and dropped them into the car - best bit of kit Ive bought has to be the engine hoist and load leveller, they just make it so easy.

I cant take all the credit though - my dear old Mum was out there helping guide the engine and box into the bay

The worst things were getting the exhaust in place and doing the rear straps up - not easy on your own and bleeding the cooling system and PAS system - not so much difficult, just annoying
Everything else just sort of falls into place, thats the great thing about the E30

what did you put in? 2.0, 2.3 or 2.5?

2.5 M20

It was the engine that came out of my 325i Sport, also fitted the gearbox and LSD

The engine hasnt been started in 2 years, just sat out in a shed covered by a sheet and it started first turn of the key today. Dont you just love BMWs

Im tooling about in a 325i touring with slipper atm also god its nice to have a 6 pot, manual and slipper

i agree with 6 pot tourings with slippers... i still got bored though which is why i went the M30 route!

Would take me all day to jack my car up, I have the mechanical skills of a 14 year old girl I'm afraid...lol.

Best thing ever and for the price you cant go wrong. I got mine from a local tool shop and saved a bit, and I didnt have to pay postage.

Its got rear discs and vented fronts, standard touring stuff isnt it? I was going to swap in the brakes and stuff from my Sport, but its all the same anyway.
I did think about 3.5 M30, 2.8 M52 and I hope to have another 3.0 S50 on the way, but I had the 2.5 M20 doing nothing and I know its a strong engine, so it would of been rude not to use it really.

I only drove the car for 5mins last night and I forgot how nice the 6pot is to drive. So much smoother than the 4pot and then theres the noise

Right Im off to find a wide open space and enjoy the slipper and 6pot growl again

Just the manifolds to get sorted on the Sport and find another LSD for it - Im looking for either a 2.91, 3.15 or 3.25 LSD.

at least you found a good home for the engine and associated parts.
Can you sell on the 1.8 engine for some pennies for a diff.
Then get that exhaust done.
Dont loose interest,you need to get it done or it'll never get done.
Im having my manifolds done now,its taking a while but should be done soon.
Then i think we should have an s50 meet up with Ian !!

Been out for a good hours run, both open road and stuck in town centre traffic. The temp gauge sat just above the 1/4 mark whilst on the move and about the 1/2 mark whilst sat in traffic.

On the move it did go up a little, say half way between 1/4 & 1/2, when doing about 25-30mph in town, but in this heat I guess thats to be expected - its also only got water in the cooling system, I didnt want to waste any coolant if it developed a leak.

Everything else seems fine - gearbox and diff are still attached and nothing else has fallen off

I havent given it any real abuse yet, just taking it easy and seeing how it goes. All in all Im happy
