BP ULTIMATE 102 Octane coming to forecourts

New fuel will be available on selected UK forecourts. Unleaded with 102 octane rating
Test show between 4-7.5% power increase in standard cars over the 97 ultimate fuel.
High performance turbo charged vehicles showed gains of 37bhp and as much as 60bhp at some points in the engine speed range (hmmm)
Gotta get me some of that shit! Just how much will it be

yes, but only if it mapped specifically for that type of fuel

There has been an article on this issue in one (or more) of the monthly car mags. I think one of the car programs may have done a feature as well (? fifth gear).
From memory - their rolling roll power calculations on various fuels (Shell Optimax / BP Ultimate) showned little or no improvement in power outputs for 'normal' or naturally aspirated cars. With turbo-charged cars, especially japanese turbos(?), they did measure significant improvements on the higher octance fuels. This was all done without remapping (using standard factory settings).
As for older (less adaptive) cars - probably see no improvements at all (might clean the injectors and combustion chambers and keep power closer to standard?).
This all seems quite expensive an experiment for E30 owners!

increases will be noticed, especially with turbo'd cars, but to gain upto 60BHP then a remap would be needed as not only air mixture would need to change but ignition timing would also have to alter signifficantly i would imagine

By significant I was referring to approx 10% power increases, as has been quite rightly pointed out 60 BHP increases would (I imagine) require a lot more than just different petrol!!!!

but there is a large difference between 15BHP increase and 60BHP increase
i'm not saying thats its not gonna be better and increase performance, i was jsut saying that to get near the 60 BHP claim then a remap would probably be needed imo
15BHP is achievable, 60BHP is much harder

It was only announced on the 24 April 2006 about this fuel so the article must refer to the Ultimate 97 which I agree is unlikely to show any performance over the standard 95 octane rated fuel.
As i work in the petroleum industry, Ive been sent an article from BP which states the figures above.....I agree 60bhp gain from a fuel is very unbelieveable.

1) I doubt our old e30's can take advantage of it
2) At £2.42 per litre, I doubt any of us would be buying it even if it did make a difference

only way to see gain is from specific mapping for that fuel, and/or an ecu that can adjust timing etc to the fuel being used.. so basically no use to us E30 guys

all that said if u have a nice high compression engine anyway like S14 or 2.7 pina lump i'm sure it would make it run/go a bit better

ive found that using the shell optmax fuel all my cars run better, including fuel consumption.
on the m3 (which was turbocharged) shell optimax was the best, on the rollers i got 10 hp exta peak power.
but at that price, i wont be using it in my IS, an other alternative is using the NOS octane booster.(ive again seen the proof on th rollers with my own car) the race formula can give gain of up to 5 point on the octain rating, £15 for tub which treat up to 50 liters which work out to be .30p a litre and cheaper than BP's price
food for thought??

Where did you get this £2.42 figure from?

on most seriously high power cars like your 600+ bhp skylines , evos blabla bla this isnt a new thing anyway! if you know much about race fuels you will know this 102 ron would be lovely in a high power e30 though for sure i never run the h35 on anything other than optimax it definatly makes a proper difference!! you can feel the difference definatly bp ultimates never really done it for me though!! but hey who knows lol.

BP said that, in its tests, where the ignition was
remapped, Ultimate 102 gave typical power benefits
of between 4.0 and 7.5 per cent above normal
Ultimate Unleaded 97. On a very high performance,
turbo-charged vehicle, with boost pressure
increased, the power benefits seen included an
increase in maximum power of 37bhp (8.6 per cent),
and as much as 60bhp (16 per cent) at some points
in the engine speed range.
Wouldn't increasing the boost pressure give more power anyway ?
I know a mate used to have a Fiesta RS Turbo with adjustable boost and that definately gave more power with the boost cranked up even if it did only last about 10 mins before engine melt-down
Cheers,

I think it means there's a 37bhp difference between a car with increased boost pressure running on normal fuel and a car with increased boost pressure running on this stuff.

BP have been selling fuel on selected forecourts with 100+ octane rating for several years now. My local one does, and my M20 325 has been running exclusively on it for about five years. Doesn't increase power in the slightest, and it won't on any engine that isn't at least fitted with knock sensors.
Nothing will be gained on any standard E30 engine by using fuel above 95RON.
Only way a different fuel might give more power on a standard E30, is if it had a higher calorific value. Since the E30 has fixed fuel maps and no feedback, that would make the mixture richer to give a mixture closer to max power rather than min emissions.
