has any1 on here ever tried or resprayed their own car? im thinkin of doin mine myself

Have you anywhere to do it? have you got a compressor? have you ever done any spraying before?

i hav got a compressor but nowher to do it!....my cars a cab and i thought since its only half a car i need to spray it might be possible doin it outdoors on a nice day

however i dont have any spraying experience other than the odd panels on my old e30s using cans!!

I wouldn't advise doing it outside because of wind.
Id get it done proffesionally unless your on a tight budget.

It can be done mate. Depends on a few things though, what colour is your cab, how far are you prepared to strip it down etc?


You can easily spray your car with cellulose outside, once its sanded down and masked up, just spray away (test on some other junk panels first to get a grip of a propper spray gun), then any bits of dirt etc you can wetsand out, then all you need to do is polish it (or wetsand and polish depending on colour)

the car is a neon blue colour i will strip grille,lights bumpers, rubber seals etc

i am on a very tight budget!

my family would rather see it go to the scrappy and constantly be sarcastic and take piss out of it, cause they want me to get an x5 or a newer bmw

but i've had e36 and a m3 and i personally think they look like shit only good thing about a e36 m3 is the engine

i only like the 80's bm's with twin headlights in the grille!

i've had this car for years all my mates etc hav long moved on and are driving x5,cayenne,e46 m3,mercs

all of which r new cars which i dont like

if i decided to buy a new car i can but its hard trying to get money out of the family for my personal car cause they hate it

so i've promised myself never to get rid of it even though it looks like shit at the moment

it feels like a part of me now( u must think im sad)

Sorry mate, but spraying a metallic outside is a no no, any bits that settle into the colour coat can't be sanded out, you will end up lacquering over all sorts of cr@p ....

what if i spray it non metallic??

So your saying your guna spray half the car non metalic or would you do the full car

A mate of mine sprayed his civic himself...

On his driveway in the summer, i helped him prep it as well as we could, then i went on holiday.

Came back 2 weeks later to see the result...

It was shite Small hairs and feathers, bits of dust etc had landed on the car and he'd sprayed over the top of them, then laquered it.

From a distance there wasnt much wrong with it, but looking at the car up close, you noticed loads of blemishes, bits of dust etc... its been buffed and polished plenty since then, but is still very bad.

I dare say though, with a bit of patience and good conditions, it could be done. Just dont expect a factory finish.

NOTHING ruins the resale value of a car more than a bad respray............
1st impressions etc.

Never seen a good "home" spray yet.

Save up for a while and get a pro to do it.

Now that you say its metallic then as mark says outside is tough. If its just a solid easy colour, like white, then sure thats fine to do,a panel at a time, making sure its all cleaned and preped nice and you could get a pretty good finish, but a first job on metallic, ooutside will just end in tears no doubt.

Another thing to do is ask a bodyshop how much theyd charge if you rubbed the car down, ring around, some might not be up for doing half a job, but some places will, they might charge a few hundred to spray the car if youve already sanded it all down etc

painting cars is a skill that takes a long time to master so dont attempt it yourself out side get it done properly, there are body shops out there that arent that expensive

I painted my 535i outside it turned out to be what i call a 10 foot car only looks good 10 feet away. up close it looked like a chocolate mess. i then resprayed my e30 metalic green indoors with a nice gun and a lot of prep work. it came out great except one small spot where i ran out of paint. in bright sun you can see down to the primer . then two weeks later my mom ran the lawn mower handle down the driverside of the car (oouch)
I plan on respraying the car myself this summer. So i say if you are doing a simple color take your time make sure you have enough paint and go for it.

you'v got to get it inside chap, why not perp the car for paint then have it painted by a bodyshop as self prep it would save you in the long run as paint is expensive and mistakes cost to put right. learning to paint on a car you love is not the way you will spoil it's look forever unless you want to spend 2k putting it right. a proper painter will save money on paint and the finnish will be far better than your first paintjob. my advise would be to find a small bodyshop that would paint your car after you have done the work. i paint all my cars and a fair few for other mate's just have a ride round some industrial estates and look for small bobyshops you will be suprised how helpfull they can be even if you trap the apprentice for some cash work lol give it a go cash is king in world of paint lol

Totaly echo Badnews's comments above. That's the way to go.
Education program for the family, and a change of mates wouldn't go amiss either. Things have gone downhill at BMW (engines excepted) ever since Feb 1994.

yep thats all in. i drop it off and pick it up in 1 weeks time they do everything

im assuming they are good cause when i went in they working on 1 or 2yr cars and a clk 230 kompressor.

the guy is from abroad and he just set up on his own and he will even fit a fibreglass kit on for me

sounds promising i might use him in a fortnight or so

Very good price mate, it would normally be double that at larger shops. Id say go for it, even if the finish isnt show condition, for 500sheets thats a good deal mate

i'd say that price is bang on fella your looking at around £150 for paint and materials, for that i would imagen spot primed repairs full hit of base and three coats of laquer oh and a lot of rubbing for the rest of your dolla. sounds good and if he'l do the kit even better

£500 for a total job seems too good to be true!! When I had my M3 painted I made sure that I was there when he was stripping it down just to make sure it wasnt a 'mask up' job and I thought £1600 was cheap.

If it true then much better than spraying it yourself outside in cellulose paint!!! You probably end up with a mobile overspray machine.

When i was younger i help spray a car with a can of dulux and a litre of petrol and a mixer colour, The car came out alright

Have you got a mate with a garage? (ie the kind attatched to your house not a proffesional garage)

My dad resprayed a car at home, completely emptied garage, stripped and rubbed down car then sweeped it and the garage of every bit of dust, and he used a load of electric bar heaters to keep the temp at a constant pretty high temperature.

He is a panel beater/sprayer by trade though so already had a spray gun, compressor etc

Do It Yourself, its the way to go. You might not do a perfect job to start, not many people do, but when you do its the " idid this" feel good factor. Plus if some git scratches it you wont cry to much as you know you can fix it for pennies!
Painted mates car last weekend in his small garage, F K was it hot but cost was not great , paint 1lr base 1ltr laq and thinners £45.00. Cost for me a few beers!

nah if you're gona get a spray job its gota be done by a bodyshop or someone with a bit of experience. when i brought my car i was thinking the same as it was brilliant red and was quite faded, i forked out a grand cash and im soo glad i did mate! at the end of the day it all depends on you but that garage price does seem well cheap. . id go for that mate!

DIY is cool, but such a pain in the arse. It took me like 8 months to go from old paint to new,fair enough mine was a rusty 18ft long american car.But take into acount, comming home from work, having a couple hours on it, having to strip down all paint, treat the metal with etch primer, sort out repairs, prime the car, flat the primer, paint it, coloursand the topcoat.Lot of work, on a small, nice condition car ok it might not take too long.But i can assure you after the first few weeks of spending every weekend and night in the garage the joy wears out!
