There's a guy in Newcastle running a 3ltr M20 on triple webbers in an E21.
He says it gets rediculous MPG's, it's for racing though. If you are really interested I'll dig out his username.

Apparently it's 253 bhp! He's had it dynoed etc, got a very hairy cam and is a b1tch to drive in town.

TBH mate, I don't think it would be worth it with 2002 Tii carbs. But it would be cool to do it with Tii carbs if you put an M20 in a 2002.
hmmmm

Why do people persevere with carbs? They are out dated technology, with a narrow power range and as stated poor economy. Throttle bodies provide the airflow advantages of carbs but with the accuracy of injection.
To much fuel is as bad for power as too little, any one who cant see that shouldnt be tuning cars!

02 ti carbs are Dellortos
tii runs on Kugelfisher mechanical injection (same system as the E9 CSL and CSi)
On a pure power comparison, slide throttles & injection have a small advantage over carbs, but then carbs are easier to set up, loads cheaper and are better at the top end of the rev scale...
I used to run an 02 on 50DCO Webers... Plenty of other mods including larger inlet valves, ported head, Schrick 300 cam, etc, etc...but I got a reliable 198bhp from that motor (engine still lives and runs in a road car).
Geoff Cook (RIP) used to run an E21 323i in the Kumhos on triple Weber IDA downdraughts....His car was on a par with mine and as good as the 325/327 motors on injection as well as the more standard M3 S14s, too.
Biggest issue with M20s is that the distributor is not adjustable for timing purposes, so you'll need to source the bits for the older M60 motors with the standard dizzy, or construct some sort of spark retardation device.

if carbs are better than injection then why do ferrari use downdraught webers?
how does a 2.1 mk1 escort get 11.93 seconds quarter mile (on down draughts) lol
carbs always go out. as did mine, until i got them on rolling road and loctite all the screws
i did an exhaust on a 325 with 3 webers. sounded the nuts, but not as good as some cars i heard with webers. again it all depends on the cam..
this is from my own experience:
THE MORE ADVANCED THE CAM TIMING IS THE MORE INDUCTION NOISE YOU GET!! ALSO THE MORE RETARDED THE TIMING IS THE MORE EXHAUST NOISE IS
anyone who knows how an engine works will understand

Not quite..........
The 1600Ti and 200/2002Ti ran on Solex 40PHH carbs, the Tii used Kugelfischer mechanical injection and the E9 Coupes used Bosch D Jetronic which was an all electronic set up like L jet but without an air flow meter.
D Jet ran until 1976 and was replaced by L Jet which was better. E9's had the ECU under the driver's seat and all the wires going in were black - nice for troubleshooting!
No M30 engine used mechanical injection except race cars which used either Bosch or Kugelfischer with slide throttles.
Carbs aren't always a waste of time. Dip's 323i set up is nice because it's all brand new and properly set up. 165 bhp is over 20 bhp up on standard because it can breath so much better. I still reckon it'd do even more on throttle bodies but that's a shitload more $$$$$$$
A 285 degree cam and a stock E30 320i head would get that close to 200 ponies - the E21 head is bloody terrible.

they look the f-ing nuts

how do they sound?
on my fiesta it sounded mad. propper carby. but the 325 i did exhaust on didnt really sound that loud through the carbs.
most annoying thing is when they go out of ballance. then it starts popping through the trumpets lol.
twin/ triple carbs are the nuts anyway. more the merrier
my cousins mk1 escort is having his trumpets through his bonnet for a laugh. ill take a pic and post it when the bonnet is back from the painters.
you can tune the engine with different size trumpets also. im not 100% sure which way it goes round but something like the longer they are the more top end you get and shorter = more bottom end
