Is this another way of telling that you've got a LSD?

I know this is very unscientific but I was cornering/taking a bend on a dual-carriage way at pace (50 mph) whilst sort of racing a powerful GOLF thingy.

I lost traction suddenly causing my sport to fishtail for about 5 secs before self-righting. I did nothing other than ease off the power and did nothing with the steering.

Luckily all was well; I didn't collide with anything, just earnt a few glares from various people as they drove past me

I've done a few 180s in a few cars - never managed it with my sport - yet
Obviously this is not definitive proof of my having a LSD, but is the above near-miss some indication that I do?

yeah mate, Luck and a L.S.D allright if it was a open diff it would have chucked you the other way, and this probably would have been a different post 8O

:D So what happend did you lose him or did he lose you?? winkeye

I was so freaked out that I purposely slowed. The Golf would've caned me anyway - probably a GTI

If I do have a LSD - its saved me more than once - I've gotta show more respect to that back end

From what you have said there is no way to tell if you have an LSD or not. Try and do a doughnout, if it goes round in a neat little circle then you probably have one, if it goes round in a huge arc with the inside wheel spinning then you do not. Jack both wheels up at the back and spin one by hand, if the other one rotates in the same direction then you do, if it goes the opposite way then you do not.

Yeah. Perhaps BMW can tell me when I put in for a service what diff its got. Truth is I wouldn't know what a LSD was if I tripped over one.

Just wanted to make sure that my car is a proper sport and not a well disguised something else

my 4dr ebay breaker has a black headlining, and an lsd and recaros in the process of being swapped onto my touring.
It also says sport on the v5 but do you think it's just a specced up SE?

4 dr is the clue here, there are no 4 door sports, it'll be an SE or maybe just an "i"....oh no here we go again

you must of been caining it fella
i came round a roundabout slowly today in the wet, in 2nd. i was just going normal, cos just had it all cleaned and polished, went to accelerate off and im still not used to the chip lol
back came right round baby right round (i wont go on with that song hehe)
by the way, jacking up both wheels and turning one to see how the opposite re-acts dont always work, ive sort of fucked my diff into a slipper
meaning if i jack em up and turn one, the other goes the same way like an lsd would.
all fun and games til it falls out the bottom.

I don't actually care if it is or not tbh as it's being broken. Rusty shell + toasted engine = scrap car :P

Even when u have an LSD that doesnt mean it works properly.IF u jack the car and both wheels turn the same way its an LSD.If the inside discs are worn badly they slip and the LSD works allmost like a normal diff... After u r sure whether its an LSD or not have it checked to see if it works right.Remember going sideways is the ONLY way to go

Not necessarily, lots of factors involved
I binned my 325i with LSD while driving sedately at around 60 on a dual carriageway in pretty much a straight line
Road was that kinda first rain wet/grease (which is why I was driving sedate) and I had put my spare rims with some utter shite 'road champ' tyres on though = feck all grip

I don't have much experience with going sideways in an open diff car but from what stenni described I would have thought that he had an open diff? The way he said it came back under control just by easing off the throttle and without any steering input sounds to me like what I have done in some open diff cars. I can't think of too many situations when I have done the same thing in my 323i with an LSD, I usually have to do something with the steering too, maybe not opposite lock but at least reduce the amount of turn (back to the centre sometimes) combined with a slight lift of the throttle if it is only a small slide. The same thing can happen in an open diff car too I think, well it has to me.

I think normally an LSD will make the car step sideways a bit quicker, less progressive than an open, so usually provoke some reaction from the driver.

not all sports have sport boxes, the auto is not a sport box. BMW Japan make 4 door sports with all the cosmetic bits and a LSD Mtech shocks etc etc. and please dont tell me an auto is not a sport, heard that before!!

the only way to tell a LSD diff for sure is to look at the identification tag.it is next to the speedo cable, if it has an S in the code it is an LSD. If it works is a different manner! Note the ID tag also gives you the Diff ratio, and can sometimes also tell if it a repleacment or original. Originals will heve the Diff ratio, replacements will have the gearing and an A if replaced by BMW.
