Painted letter 'D" on the side of an m10 block

Posting on behalf of a fellow 2002 owner who has an e30 m10 block to hand - any idea on the significance of the white letter "D" on the side?
It's definitely a factory painted thing as m90s got a leter L in the same white paint/font.
