FRONT WINGS

Hello! I have a lovely 1989 Cab which has very tired front wings now - I've been told there are some pretty poor quality pattern parts out there - can anyone recommend a good quality supplier? I don't really want to pay OEM prices if I can avoid it. Also, one of the headless rivets on the folding hood mechanism has failed - is there a known fix for this?
Thanks for any help!
Jim

I have just had the THIRD whack on my wings, two on the right and now the left one is scrapped. although my insurance company (Linia Directa) claim to only use OEM parts they have not been able to buy one but German made copies are good and Schmiedmann for instance try to supply OEM only. Autodoc etc list German sounding parts from 57€ but are not so.

No such thing as OEM panels any more. BMW farm out the work to outside companies and the fit is likely to be as dodgy as anything else but with the BMW £££ premium.

This, and from personal experience this was the case over 15 years ago for wings.

Going to have to take my own advice. hit by some idiot in a Mini Cooper SD and insurance company has written it off, FOR A WING!
they say repairs for replacing one wing, left. small repair to leading edge of door and refit trim 900€ PLUS LABOUR.
I said if you can find me an E30 for 900€ I'll take all you have.. I know a BMW wing WAS 330€ but none about, like new under trays and many other parts, well ALL parts apart from bonnet badges.
[ It seems that either parts are copies or listed by drop shippers who do not have nor can get.
900€ plus labour!!!

Someone is getting shafted. I even have the trim and skirt parts, still good.

yet again I am the victim of idiots and bureaucracy.
Hit from BEHIND by a speeding Mini as I was changing lanes in a shopping centre prior to turning I WAS IN THE WRONG! But to add insult to injury, despite it being obvious I was hit from behind I was in the wrong? Clipped the rear bumper on the corner pushing it forwards by 2" then sliding his front tyre into the front of my front door and smashing the wing forward onto the wheel. He said I had "cut across him" but the evidence says different and if I was doing the 20KPH required what was he doing?
Adding further insult to injury I was informed my car is a write off, again. 900€ plus labour for a FRONT WING?? 900€! what the hell is it made off? The insurance company, (Linia Directa, (Direct Line)) says they "only use genuine parts", well that's crap as there are no genuine BMW E30 parts now unless NOS..
I can buy a new wing, galvanised, for 57€, plus a coat of white paint and a couple of hours painting and changing it, I will have to accept the ridiculous valuation of 800€ for a 6,000€ car so I can repair it myself. so much for "fully comp'"

Always go for an "agreed value" insurance policy

The usual course of action is to gather adverts of similar cars and present them to your insurance company to prove their value is miles out

I would if I could, not in Spain where the CAR not the driver is insured and only by 'Carters' guide. . Only one company gave me a quote and it was triple what I pay for the 2001 Mercedes A-class.

Tried that when I was the victim of someone pulling out and it was clearly their fault last year.. They will not budge from the trade in price by the book. A year ago it was 1038€ and now under 900@ (and that is as it is registered as a 1995 not a 1987 which is on the log book for some weird reason) despite the fact the replacement cost is over 5,000€ minimum and I have even been offered 5700€ by a "we buy your car" company on-line, , IF I could find one the same, which as anyone looking for a 'chromie[au]
totally rust free, 4 door auto or manual will tell you, it ain't easy.
Just this minuet bought a new wing without indicator slot of course for 38€ inc' shipping. be here in 4 days.

Down the scrapyard Monday for a left internal handle I br0oke with my elbow in the shunt and some trim clips. Just need some paint and all done for under 100€ and about three hours work.,, 900€ my arse! getting the front of the door back will be the hardest part but doable.

Agreed value or get a valuation from BMW car club. I can't get agreed value as am 23 and all the companies I've contacted require you to be at least 25. So I got a valuation from BMW car club instead and hopefully in the event I have an accident/car gets damaged then that will provide evidence of its value. I've also kept a record of every penny I've spent on the thing.

In my experience the insurgence companies will pay out as little as possible and if that means going by 'Glasses guide? or what ever black book they will and they stick to it.
Agreed value is a nice idea but VERY FEW insurers do it and only to select drivers. I know, I have tried.
I pay 155€ forTP, F & T , glass and recovery. but the only quote I could get for agreed value of 6.000€ was 330€ TP only. so if it's my fault, bye bye car. TP, F&T was over 500€.

Just had Linia Directa on the phone and the value according to the Ganvan ??? book is 500€ but they are paying me 600€ which is their minimum payout on total loss. The lowest valuation on line this morning was 2700€ on 'Auto Value'-
Something stinks n the car insurance business. A wing estimate 900€plus labour and paint, even with new trim strip (in the boot) and a little work on the door front edge I can't see 900€. They said, "But we only use genuine BMW parts", quite surprised when I said there are no "ex factory' BMW E30 parts.
In act there are no more car MAKERS any more, they just assemble parts that arrive 'just in time' from out-scored manufactures like Hella, Bosch, metal pressers, Girling, Febi, ect. Some stuff is 'in house' but even then sub components are fitted to them,
When I was parts manager for a Honda dealer I was asked by reps if I wanted "Genuine parts in genuine boxes or plain boxes or patten pats in genuine boxes etc. all made by ART, as fitted to Honda by Honda.. Most car makers are the same.

Thought I had cracked it when I went to the scrap yard today, 3 wings, yeah, but, one wing facelift, one had a big dent in the front and one had been lacquered and had a dent in the arch so all in all best to blow 80€ and get a new one anyway.

Even one with a dent in it, if its an original, would be my panel of choice rather than an aftermarket wing that doesn't fit

Going by the amount of repair, filling, sanding, etc. I had to do on the last (right) 'original' wing I think will risk it.

Front wing, Italian maker, on the way from France , 78€, need a new door strip (chromed) and a couple of drops of paint. Couple of weeks all good again.
