If both wheels are off the floor, spin one manually and if the other rotates in the same direction, YOU HAVE AN LSD. If it spins the other way YOU DONT. Alternatively, find and open space, put full lock on the steering, floor the throttle then slide your foot sideways off the clutch so it just springs up of its own accord. Report your findings back and we will confirm if you have a limited slip diff.

Ive owned my 325 Touring for about 4 weeks and Ive been wondering how I tell - the fact that it just grips and fooks off should give me some indication I guess

Hmmm, will watch this post cheers :)

Just do what i said first of all, jack it up then put it on axle stands so both rear wheels are suspended. Grab one wheel and rotate it forward. If the opposing wheel turns at roughly the same speed in the same direction then you have a limited slip diff. If the opposing wheel turns in the opposite direction then you have an open diff. Simple.

An easier and quicker jack method is to just lift one rear wheel up...

With one rear in the air you shouldn't be able to turn the suspended wheel. Make sure the handbrake is off and the car is in nuetral though

Alternatively, sit at some traffic lights, bring the revs up to 4k...when the lights go green dump the clutch. If you leave a '1' you've not got an LSD if you leave an '11' you have

An open diff will leave an 11 also 9 times out of 10, unless the road surface is uneven, or one side has a better grip than the other.
My mate has an E36 320i, and has the least mechanical sympathy I have ever seen. His favourite trick is to boot it and then pop the clutch and he always leaves two thick black lines. You are better of trying to do a donut, because it is nigh on impossible with an open diff.

well

if you HAVE got LSD i advice you to sit down until the buzz starts to come on, then not to get into any mental 'loops' or it will seem like you are in one for the rest of time (in reality keep telling yourself it will wear off in 12 hours or so...)

;)

(sorry couldnt resist that - saw the thread title and thought "thats just TOO precious!")
