E30 Zone

Hi,

Just wondering whether anyone has fitted a pair of pattern wings such as,

I don't mind a bit of fettling to fit, but just after any experiances/advice?

Iv fitted a set before make sure you put a good rust and stonechip resistant paint on tge inside before fitting. And i had to cut metal from the inner stiffener beam with the to bolt holes to get it to sit closer to the car other than that tho its pretty good for pattern part just fit everything loosely until its aligned the tighten down

Veng pattern wings used to be ok but still required a bit of fettling. No idea if they still make them for E30s. A mate at a bodyshop uses a lot of Imperial Panels wings. He'll admit all need attention from a panel beater but said they're better than most.

Thanks for the input guys, sounds much as expected. I'll protect the insides well especially where any parts have required trimming as you mention.

Forgive me but why would you use these when the genuine ones aren't really that much more?

Because 'genuine' wings from BMW these days also appear to be 'pattern'.

Even the fuel lines are pattern now, bought one the other week and had to reshape it in about 5 places....

I was under the impression that the BMW ones would be a direct fit. Are they not?

BMW's spares service for their long obsolete models is second to none, but they make no guarantees that any replacement part is identical to the original - merely that it will serve the same function.
If you want originality and the quality of OE parts, in same cases you have to search out unblemished second hand parts or 'new old stock' that has been tucked away at the back of some shelf for twenty five years.

I understand. Same thing with my old motorbikes. Even the stock part from Kawasaki might be slightly different. But they always fit. I kind of just assumed BMW would be using the same tooling for parts made today. I was under the impression they generally just provide the tooling to Magna or whoever is doing their spare parts.
