Best bang for your buck is to get it running as it left the factory. £200 spent on this will have likely have much more effect than the next £2000 spent on 'mods' (some of which will probably reduce performance.)
Rebuilt injectors, the elimination of minor inlet side air leaks and ensuring all 'adjustments' are set as they should be (which normally means ensuring that they haven't been changed from the factory positions) brings real rewards in most cases.
Do the same to the chassis, avoiding the temptation to fit nasty plastic bushes, and your car, assuming a bit of sunshine, will be a pleasant place to be.
If the standard M20B25 power still isn't enough for you, then a M20 modded to 2.8 litres, or a M52B28 conversion is the way to go.

was going to give it a very big service but has done some miles 155,000 so was thinking it may need some mods to get the hp and torque back up abit

At that kind of mileage, everything in the engine should still be well within new spec., assuming the service schedules haven't been too badly neglected, except possibly a bit of wear on the exhaust valve guides, but if the injectors haven't been touched, then they will be well down on performance by now.
