hi there
just got it back tonight and all the works been done on it
going to start using it for work this week and was wondering what sort of mileage i should get out of a tank, mostly round town driving?
Seemed a small tank too unless the gauge is dodgy i think it takes about Ԛ£29 to fill it up,seems a bit small
cheers

Over 30mpg should be easy.
I tend to get just under 45mpg in town (5th gear at 30mph etc) and just over 40mpg on average but that's with a slightly smaller engine (316i) and lighter car (2 door).
The 318i cab which would be more comparible to the touring I get 6-7mpg less than the above figures.
All depends on how you drive it!

I should think Ԛ£40 in the tank at least!

Tank should be 62 litres, so either you've got a source of very cheap petrol, or you're not emptying it.
You're propably missreading the fuel gauge - it goes right down past the red painted bit and onto the bit below that before you run out.
There's a warning lamp that lights in the gauge when you get down to six litres. Trust it - I've never seen one that doesn't work - but carry a can of fuel with you, just in case.

Don't push it that far too often - you'll knacker the fuel pump through cavitation.
RED LIGHT

is the warning light independant from the guage as i recon mines reading a bit low as ive filled it up when i picked it up and only got Ԛ£29 in it
weird thing is it only read slightly under full afterwards
i guess now i know it could have gone lower when it was empty as it was just on the empty line and not below like you say
Its a pain all these mpg, does anyone know how many miles you would get on say Ԛ£40?, as thats the size of the tank on the car were going to be replacing and i know how much that car can do.
other half wont be too happy if its a lot worse ! lol
as shes paying

Fuel level light is worked by a seperate switch inside the fuel level cannister attached to the fuel pump, but,I assume, using the same float.
E30 fuel tanks are either 55 or 62 litres.

I was told that the Saloon's have a 45 litre tank and the Tourer has a 55litre tank. I've only ever been able to stick 45 litre's in mine
aka: 318i lux 4 door

It'll only take 55 litres if you empty it first. Should take 49 litres from when the fuel light comes on.
