Valuations

Hi guys
Valuations........... I've wondered how the insurance companies value our pride and joys when you get an agreed valuation set. I had a 1988 320 auto cabriolet with 104000 miles and Lancaster insurance gave me an agreed valuation of £5500.
I sold the car for £3500 but at the time no cars of that age and condition were selling for as much as I got.
Is there any kind of guide for pricing on these ? It seems that sports go for silly money which I don't understand as I would take a cabriolet over a sport any day but that's personal preference .
