I always thought to drift you needed a LSD or welded diff

Just saw this post where 120d is drifting with open diff
How is that possible with open diff ?

What are the major differences in drifting with LSD v drifting with open diff ?

Any RWD car can be made to drift quite easily, given a slippery enough surface and a reasonable amount of power, even a Morris Minor!

I think with LSD feels a bit more controllable and progressive when is drifting (than open diff)
Get more traction too from tight corners

The only RWD car I've ever had difficulty drifting was a 594cc Fiat 126 - it was so gutless, it would struggle to pull a wheelspin on loose gravel!

I've drifted with all 3. Open diff is ok when drifting in 1 direction, try transitioning and its much harder to link a course. LSD is ok if its in good order, most are crap and wont lock as much as they should, a welder is much better as you know its locked and will be very easy to skid. Drifters either use welders or 1.5/2 way LSD.

Nah doubt it, 2 way LSD like KAAZ are £1,000 plus.

With an open diff you can get in a slide but holding the drift and/or transitioning the drift eg figures of 8 isn't that difficult with open diff ?

Every drifting guide I have seen on the Internet says you need RWD and LSD (or if you are tight welded diff). I would just be concerned about the safety aspects and legality of welded diff.

Presumably the same skills are required whether you have LSD, open diff, welded diff.

I have had some sideways moments with E30 and open diff using power oversteer (ie too much throttle on exit), lift off oversteer (ie lifting off in the middle of the corner) or braking in the corner (I don't know what the technical drifting technique for this one is called)

I haven't tried clutch kick, dirt drop techniques
Never done any donuts in my own car or proper burnouts
And I am ashamed to admit I don't know how to do a handbrake turn
Maybe some one can teach me on here ????

Just learning how the E30 is with LSD and getting used to it.

best thing to do is take it to a dead road and abuse it that's the only way your gona learn

Yes they are. Yours is

They can be altered for different lock percentages for drive and coast too, making them 1.5 way.

Get yourself to a drift day and find someone who knows their shizzle and get them to take you out and show you the ropes. Plenty of people there to lend a hand and advise. Despite their tatoo'd faces, most drifters are pretty friendly

I learned to drift the old skool way, in a mk2 escort (when they were £500 for a minter... mine cost £70!) in a gravel car park. Less grip and less speed is handy when you're learning.

If you can find a skid pan day you can learn loads at lower speeds and with less stress on the car (even someone else's car!) to save the embarrassment and hassle/cost of binning your car with an audience!
