Burton Engine mounts...

Whilst changing my rack for an E46 067 last summer. Along with DanThe's hose's and linkage, I put in a set of Burton engine mounts for an Escort Mexico as recommended to help with manifold clearance.

I noticed shortly after fitting them the offside mount was bulging similar to the tired ones that were on the car before. I assume that that mount takes more load due to the rotation of the engine but should it bulge that soon after being fitted?

The linkage does foul the exhuast when turning hard left.

The engine's an M20B25.

Just seeing if anyone else with these mounts (or any other) have found the same.. or have I just got a duff one?

I have the same issue, a very slight fowling of the exhaust when turning left. I bought a set of needle files recently to see if they will do the trick on the linkage, not got round to it yet though.

Haven't noticed the mounts bulging if I'm honest!

Hello Matt..

I was thinking of taking the dremel to it as an option. I think Kedge did something similar.

Just popped out in the rain to take a pic. I'll pop them up once I get home as I can't seem to upload images from my phone..

Here we are.. I couldn't get to the other to get a comparison photo. But its straight cylindrical in shape unlike this bulbous looking one..

It will be the heat from the manifold doing that plus the compression of the engine moving, a heat shield might help it last longer but realistically a better mount is needed by the looks of that.
Swapping it with the pass side will keep you going while you find something else

Don't Burton power do uprated PU one's? I know power flex sell them as part of their black series.

when i did my own E30/rack swap/replaced useing genuine new bmw rubber mounts and also there is a metal cup that the bush sits in as well on some models to stop the rubber bulgeing i used them as well.that helped a lot.

Thanks Gents..

That makes sense.. didn't think about the heat. I'm sure there was something in the wiki pages of using engine mounts off another BMW for clearance... couldn't find anything having just had a quick floss.

Couldn't find anything else on the Burton website either, but at least I got a thickness.. 52mm.

What rack did you use navi?

I dabbled with E28 M5 mounts but they raised the engine too much for my liking. I've got the Burton mounts, and a BTB3 manifold, not put the linkage back in yet so can't comment on how much clearance there is with that.

I did. Took a grinder to them and smoothed off all the sharpe edges, certainly added more clearance with the BTB2 and E28 mounts.

With the BTB3 you should have more clearance than the cast manifold/original front pipes

Yea, should do, huge waste of money if there isn't :)

Part #12 missing from your mounts.
hmmm. They're not listed on TheReal OEM's website.. Perhaps I'll get another set of Burton mounts and give that stopper a try..

Thanks Brian.

Its not going to keep the heat away from the mount, and definitely wont stop the compression either

I thought it was just manual 325i's that had them looking at a friends sport that still has it's original engine mounts with only 32k on the dash,
but i have an auto 325i with them on ! why didn't they all get them ?

I have no definitive answer as to why some did and some didn't but i have changed many pair of engine mounts on cars with out them and the date stamps on the rubber mounts have been in line with the cars age which would say they haven't been apart.

My sport included.

Also, there are plenty of pics in BMW repair manuals that do not have them.

These are just a couple,

used a Z3M rack into my 325i useing all standard bmw oil pipes from differant models till i found a set that fitted without problems (just a little gentle bending) inc a oil cooler for the rack,25mm solid spacers between rack/x-member,and i had a ali steering coupleing disc made up to join the E30/E36 shaft and did away with the rubber join.along with useing E30 steering arms and 'notching' the inner rack so you could lock tags in place.
one of the best mods i did to it in the ten years i owned it,now ive got to do my E36 rack up grade!
that part 12 is the cup that i added to mine own car to help stiffen the rubber engine mount up,after owning lots of mk1&2 escorts all the mexicos/RS1600&2000 had the same type of cup to stiffen and take the flex off the rubber mount from factory again most people leave them off when thay change engines not knowing the reason thay was fitted in the first place!

Cheers.. they didn't show on my search when entering my car's details (325i Touring)

DanThe wrote: Its not going to keep the heat away from the mount, and definitely wont stop the compression either
I didn't think it would help with heat, but thought it might help out enough compression wise... I figured it would be a cheap option to try, but at £40 a piece....

Anyone know how accurate this £40 a time is? My link shows them at around £5 each, and although it's a long time since I bought one, I don't remember the price as being exorbitant.
They weren't fitted to all 325s, and as Barry says, I can't work out which models were either, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be fitted as an upgrade.

I was replying to a post from Barry that said he had a blowout going over a pothole.

But the post has disappeared. Very odd.

That size is correct for the rim by the way, not designed for offroading* mind!
