Hi guys, I'm pretty new here (just picked up an e30) so please forgive me if this is a stupid question.

Why do some tourings have a black bootlid? Mine came with one but not sure if I like it and considering painting it to match the rest of the car. At first I thought it was just my car but looking at the forums found a few pics like this...

The only tourings that came with a black tailgate were black ones! Yours has been replaced at some stage no doubt due to chronic rot.

Its matt black, so someone has definitely had it sprayed in that case. Good paint job if so definately not a DIY job.

But, I think I am going to have it back to stock colour

If it's matt black, then make sure it's not the factory primer rather than proper paint. Primer is porous and will suck in moisture, leading to rust, so get it sorted ASAP.

Touring tailgates rust...

The rubber seal at the base of the glass shrinks and lets water into the channel it sits in,there's no drain hole,so the water makes it's own.
The easy solution is to bin the rubber seal and fill the channel with a flexible sealant,I used a black silicone, but I would suggest that a black polyurethene sealant would be better.

The one right across the bottom of the glass on the outside.

So you suggest sealing up the corners then??
I have just put new seals around my tailgate glass and the 3 seals do not meet in the bottom corners.

New rubber is approx £15 from the dealers, I was going to order one but not sure now.

Also checked the rear and its definitely not just a primer!
