E30 Zone

Going to look at a car tomorrow for the mrs and the guy says he has no V5 and is waiting for it to come in the post. He has the green slip (which i think is a bit odd)

Anyone have any advise on whether it is legal to buy/sell a car like this and where i stand if i decide to buy?

When did he buy it? Sounds a bit strange. You can fill in a form to request a new v5 it's the v62 I think, or he may be able to do it over the phone.

sounds like he's bought it recently and he's moving it on quick even before he's got the V5 back from DVLA 2 things spring to mind,

1. he's bought a turd/hound and wants to move it on fast...
2. logbook loan taken out on it

whilst it's not illegal to sell a car without a V5, any respectable guy selling a car would have all this in place before he considered selling it...

Seen this on Fleabay plenty of times, saying the logbook is on it's way but will provide a receipt.

Receipt is fair enough, if not vital but with no logbook when nowadays doesn't take long at all to get back from Swansea is a tad disturbing to say the least...Having said that I done exactly that but I did get in touch with the owner before the seller to me and got all the necessary information.
In this case it was originally bought with no MoT/tax just to take the foglights off (very rare option on a Saab 900) and scrap the rest, glad to say it hasn't been scrapped and I've had it on the road for 8 months now but it did worry me; took a big risk in my eyes and don't really want to do that again.......

For me it cost £20 I think 3 years ago. DVLA are supposed to send a letter to the registered keeper that a request to change keeper is taking place so could take a while. Fortunately for me the previous owner sent a letter to the DVLA stating the logbook was lost and has been sold to me so only took a week or so.

EDIT: It's £25, dunno if it's gone up or my memory is shot to bits...

I've just sold a compact without a V5 though I know the seller i purchased it from had it as i signed it when i purchased the car. The problem with DVLA's stupid system is them and occasionally the stupid sellers who don't send the v5 off for ages. I keep my own paperwork in order but unfortunately with the seller sends system that's in place it's not in my control. I must admit i find comments like " i'd always make sure this is sorted before selling" very annoying as it sometimes takes ages for DVLA to get round to issuing a V5 and once i want to sell a car i want it gone yesterday as space is always an issue. I've purchased many cars with no V5 and I've never had an issue though the logbook loans problem is growing however i've always seen this as more of an issue North of Watford

I often sell them with just green slip, its down to seller to get the log book to dvla these days and often in the local court files around here the DVLA are dishing out fines for not forwarding log book etc!
