Insurance. What a rip off/joke!

Finding it difficult to insure my touring at a reasonable cost. It's only a 318i but the quotes are £300+ TPFT :(
I'm 32, full NCB, no accidents etc etc and live in a quiet area.

As an experiment I got a quote on my 325i Sport as my daily driver, with engine conversion and mods declared - £305 FC

The comparison sites got it down to around £200 at first quote, but once they've added their fees etc, the final premium is back up towards £300 - that's without the optional stuff.

Anyone got any decent companies to try?

Sure term direct have always been decent with me, I've always done limited mileage classic policy

The car is my daily, and the only classic insurance that get it below £200 require it to be my 2nd car that's not used daily.
I got a couple classic quotes with it being my daily but they were over £400!

Adrain Flux worked well for me this year, £300 F/C with mods declared.

Flux were just under £300 TPFT on a standard 318i touring 8O
But, they were cheaper for my Sport (without mods)
They also used to offer DOC cover on TPFT and FC but won't now as the touring is my daily driver. And they won't offer DOC on a policy with my Sport if I insure the touring with them :(

I should say I've tried the comparison sites and all the usual companies, Flux, Performance Direct, Footman James, Lancaster etc etc etc. I've been on the phone for ages!
Was looking for some local (not to me) brokers to try.

Yeah, fair play.
But, I've not paid much over £300 to insure a car since my Sport in 2002 - I was 21 after all, but since then my last 318i touring was £165 FC (with an M20b25 fitted) and my old 306 was £220 FC. My Sport with S50 conversion and all mods declared was £380 FC!

I think I may of cracked it though....
I'll update tomorrow once I have the call back (fingers crossed).

Cheers, but they will only insure the car on a classic policy as a second car, won't take my ncb into consideration and I wont earn any either - £390 TPFT

I can insure it as a second car for £170ish, but I would need to buy another car as a daily - then its just as expensive as £400 odd for the E30, plus tax, mot....

Anyone got any ideas on a cheap as chips car to buy and insure as a daily??

this is strange as we had the same problem with a 318touring a few years ago, it was more than the 318is to insure, its mad how they get the prices

I wish my insurance was that cheap. My E30 with everything declared is £1100 for the year.

Strange. I used to insure my Minor Traveller on a separate classic car policy, and my Minor twin-cam saloon with Adrian Flux (because it is fairly highly modified), but then the classic policy demanded you have a daily use car, so this year I put both cars on the Adrian Flux policy, for £150 fully comp, agreed value with mods declared.

Flux used to be good for me until they partnered with HIC, then quotes on standard cars went through the roof - modified cars were still good though.
I did get a call back from Flux- £170 :) for TPO with a limited 1500 mile limit :(

Well insurance is sorted now, got 2 decent quotes in the end, but not without some back and forth...
Online quote from Swinton - £208 TPFT (upto £287 with fees added), phoned my local Swinton branch - £400 TPFT 8O I complained a bit and got £210 cashback making it £190 TPFT including DOC cover!

Lancaster was £205 FC on the standard 318i. I requested a quote for fitting an iS engine - £220 FC

I'm not sure on having FC insurance on an E30 as it won't take much of a knock to write the car off.
That said, the touring will be getting 16valves in the near future so I went with Lancaster even though I have lost my DOC cover, as Swinton wanted £750 TPFT with the engine conversion!

Did you try asking FC on the touring? I have found bizarrely that TPFT can be more expensive than quoting FC!

Yup, the quotes above were the cheapest - I always ask for quotes on both TPFT and FC as have found FC to be cheaper sometimes as well.
Swinton were £500 odd for fully comp, Lancaster wouldn't do TPFT unless I had another car to use

One reason I found for the high quotes is down to the car - 1993 318i lux touring. I got a quote on my 'spares' touring, a 1990 318i (not a lux) and the quotes were much cheaper, the cheapest being £145 FC! But interestingly (or not) the quotes were higher with the engine conversion on the non lux touring.

Its all scam anyway! Its properly random. Hope you can sort something out. I'm using Lancaster on the e30 so I don't know if they are worth a go.

Yup, all an absolute joke. I reckon I should try getting quotes at a different time of the year and see what difference it makes!

I've gone with Lancaster. £220 FC with engine conversion, not too bad considering the quotes for the standard car.

the 318is is the same to insure as a 318i m40 :D

i bought a ford escort ghia tdi and had to pay £120 extra over the lux model i upgraded from ....it only had some fake wood and a couple more buttons FFS ! :x

That's what I thought, but not the 318i lux it seems :( And they ain't exactly stacked with options.

I nearly bought an iS but wanted a touring again, and I don't like galvanised steel - reminds me of rusty sheds :D

I went from a 325i sport with adrian flux for £350 fully comp to a 1.8is £550 fully comp. Its bloody stupid. Now I have another 325i insured with them fully comp on classic limited to 5000 miles a year and its £160. I am also 32 have full NCB. I think insurance companies just hate the is badge but that doesnt explain your touring.

I have also found that I got a good quote through swinton online on my work truck but when I tried to take it out through my local branch they wanted over £100 more!! Its a joke. I think because companies know we need insurance they just seem to pluck figures out of the sky :banghead:

its not all about power/bhp/speed

its more than likley that its an "estate" a bigger size, different use, maybe that you maybe loading the back up with stuff, carting stuff about, heavier and maybe loaded right up a lot, do more damage if you hit other cars, that sort of thing

I put my girlfriend on my insurance and it knocked £100's off last time. Mentioned it to a mate he says he put his girlfriend and Mum on his insurance to get it lower.

I'm 31, 12 odd years NCB and still can't seem to get much below £500.
