That will be worth ten grand in a couple of years if you tart it up.

It's like a patchwork thing! I partly think 'what the hell is wrong with you' but also think 'good on you for taking it on'. :D

What's the plan with this one? I recall you did a 2.7 stroker on a previous one.

I'd be worried about that snapped rocker though, mostly due to mine and what I found under the head when I removed it.

My rocker:

My head & cylinders:

Mind you I was greeted with this too:

Hoping (perhaps in vein) that the pistons/rods/bearings will be ok, if not then i still have a hoard of parts left over from the 2.8 build,

Chris, i hear you, this will be strictly OEM with the exception of an original 'zone' mild chip supplied by Ant.

Bab will be printing that out and pinning it up beside his Tech I Sport. I believe his rust is similarly unmodified.

There's a lovely car inside that somewhere.. :D

It's ok, looking at the second pic, it does have one fitted already, he doesn't need to worry about where to drill. :D

It has (shockingly/ironically?) a very nice chrome tipped and properly fitted Beau electric aerial,

However should i feel the need to add to this i'm sure thumping the turd in any location would leave a suitable hole...

Also, wiring/bottle for intensive wash/wipe though the pipes and wipers have been removed for the intensive...

you can't chip these early cars iirc?

I've got a great 2.5 bottom end if its pear shaped which i'm not sure it will be. It is a 8.8 CR though

Perhaps worth keeping an eye out for some H/C pistons if its bad news Si,

Have you got any spares left?

I'll take a lachs bonnet and front bumper/valance if they're not scrap mate?

Diddler, its hibernating right now, going strong though and up on pistonheads, not really fussed with it atm especially on salty wet roads!

It's an illness ! :) I have a good hi comp bottom end if its ugly in there. Personally, if the cam looks OK and there is no carnage in the cylinder, I would be knocking back the shaft and sticking a rocker on it in situ :)

I can supply a chip for the 073 ECU, as fitted to Tech 1 Sports, and early pre-facelift 325i's.

I'll grab a scope from work and have a look before wasting an hour stripping off the head Pete,

PM on its way...

Cue Polsta "Every Tech 1 will be worth ten grand.. one day"

EDIT

Also mine has no visible rust. It had the decency to hide out of sight!

That Lachs silver sport Penton refers to is in fact Delphin, but hey, the ainter next door thought the E36 in today was boston green when its black!
Show us your bulkhead! You never know the full extent of rust til its back to a bare shell, and even then you find more!
Rocker, change the broken one, start it up and see, you may be lucky.
Have high comp pistons in stock if required, found a box of them the other week.
Good buy though!
Been saying tech 1's are best of the sports for years, ahead of the game me!

all the best matey, looking forward to this one.

Started stripping down the timing covers and cooling system today,

Aircon condenser is past its best so that can go, luckily i have a load of spare aircon gear to go on without too much hassle at some point in the future.

Set head to tdc, hopefully strip everything else down tomorrow,

Noticed that there is no power assistance fro the rack, debating to spec up while i'm there as i have spare PAS gear sitting idle...

Picture tomorrow hopefully :)

Is there carnage ? I assume there is or else you would be just replacing the one foooked rocker in situ. .

Sounds like it could well have suffered the same fate as my engine then, mashed piston(s). :(

Its been a while since i've done a head on an m20 and the bolts have never been changed, didn't feel as much compression as i'd expect cranking it over so its worth doing the stem seals and checking the guides at the same time, cant smell and fuel in the oil nor is there mayo...

I haven't got an engine crane at home so can't get the shaft back far enough to swap the rocker, the bulkhead is solid there at least! Its easier to have the head off and eyeball the pistons for piece of mind, or piece of frag depending on how its fared in there...

I did PM you about that interior Peter, i'll try and call tomorrow afternoon.

Barry, plan is to do proper remedial work on a 1st aid basis, if it needs welding for the mot then i'll leave it on the drive until Nath has time to come and do his mobile mig bit...

All the other rust can get deox'd and treated until choppy-choppy time :)

The last chap seems to have timed it up properly after getting the head off earlier,

A few quick pictures:

The blower fan was missing, interesting...

Tiny nicks in pistons 1 & 6 and cylinder 3 had some gunk in it but all in all not bad for a 100k engine thats not had the head off before methinks...

That dealer aircon setup looks nasty though i have the pipework to go factory fit with this, i'm open to suggestions.

No apparent damage to the valves although i have 1 & 6 inlets being slightly banana shaped...

:)

Indeed, Tech 1 lines appeal to me far more now than when i joined the zone...

This will never be a 'proper-mint-rare' car but hopefully a bit of fun, Might take it to the ring in May if the moordoor sells before then

:)

One fresh head,

Had an insert fitted for the bottom back stud but other wise all is good, one and six inlet valves replaced along with all the inlet rockers and shaft, OEM head set stem seals etc...

Piston tops cleaned and block face given some gentle abrasion ready for the gasket, hopefully tomorrow

:)
