An L-Jet 320i will do it in 17.2 sec, according to this:

While a Motronic 320i takes 16.5 sec, according to this:

how about someone with your mild chip
16.5 will be my target anything less is a bonus and anything more will be considered a trial run

Aj i would love too!! however my millage is still under 70k so i wouldn't want to devalue it by sticking another engine in.
i can't believe the e30 is that bad, i mean i know its not the fastest but 18-20 surely that's abit far fetched.
what are you guys launching at?

Because they own a 320i?
Theres lots of 'probably' and 'about' times... I think its all down to you as a driver too... The best way to find out if to do the run

I'd blame the VW crowd for this. With their revvy little 1.6 16V engines, Golfs and Jettas made people think that small german saloons should be quick off the mark, and if the E30 has a 2.0 then it should be even quicker...
Trouble is, The M20B20's six cylinders aren't so much about exploding a rocket, but more about injecting hot fresh lava into the steam boiler to keep the thing going. This gives the 320i a wonderful smooth cruising power, a bit like continental drift or the ice caps calving a fresh iceberg, but it's certainly not sprightly.

I foolishly believed I was 'upgrading' performance when swapping my 318i for a 320i convertible, when in truth my 318i was more repsonsive, nippy, revvier and quicker through the gears.
Once you get it on the A roads though the 320i will put a smile on your face!

That's a great way of describing the M20B20!
Mind you, I thought my first E30, a 1984 L-Jet 320i moredoor was incredibly quick compared to the old classic cars I'd previously been used to - I could get a 0-60mph in 8 seconds and 125 mph out of it; in fact, it quickly earned me 9 points on my licence and I had to sell it before I lost my licence!
A few years later, I bought a 1987 L-Jet 320iSE 2-door, but it was nowhere near as quick for some reason, although still deliciously smooth.

My Best Time was "1/4 ET = 17.55 seconds @ 79.13mph" on almost bold tires!! that was a good result considering on Saturday i could not hit sub 18s

That's weird, wonder why that was?

Not sure. My '84 would do 0-60 mph in around 8 seconds, but the '87, despite being a theoretically lighter 2-door, would take 10+ seconds, and just didn't feel anywhere near as lively, throughout the rev range. In fact, it felt very leisurely indeed, which is one reason why I sold it.
It may have been down to the diff ratio; the '87 had a 3.64:1, which is the same as most 325iSEs had. Perhaps the '84 had a better-suited diff?

+1 I have had both 85 and 89 (x2) 320s and the chromie was appreciably faster.

My 320 certainly felt slower than my 318i.
