Just a thought............you see alot of engine swaps on here,but have not heard of a diesil!!!!!!,is this possible??

Poor idea when you factor in the unreliability, conversion cost and cost of diesel over petrol. A mentalist would need to do a lot of miles to justify it.

Unless you have a steady supply of red or Vcheap/free diesel I wouldnt even consider it.

Old diesel engines are rattley, slow, heavy and not particularly economical.

New diesel engines are a bit lighter a bit less rattly, have tons or torque but are expensive and complex.

You'd have to do a massive amount of miles to cover the conversion cost against driving a 318i sensibly.

If you want a cheap diesel smoker, buy a cheap diesel smoker and leave the e30 as it was.

If fuel economy is your thing run a petrol engine on gas.

My e39 is far superior to the e34 or e28 equivelant. If it wasn't then bmw are doing something wrong

I have an e36 coupe with a 2.5tds engine in it,it managed a 15 sec 1/4 mile at 92.4mph last mth.I was hanging with some big boys,ie a twin turbo sierra(225hp),328 sport,saab aero hot(260hp),my problem was BALD tyres lmao! Of the line 1st gear was useless,2nd i was spinning a bit then once i hooked up,the cars i was running against werent pulling away! Beat a Toyota Alteza(212hp) and a tuned seat tdi.

Back to drag on the 21st,with 18s on with decent rubber. Very confident in my re-match with these cars i lost to. Standard engine is slow,but with a few tweaks goes really well. FMIC,chip,EGR delete,cone filter,de-cat,apexi B/C set at 1.5 bar.

This car replaced an 02 e39 M5 i had,and its been its perfect replacement.30+MPG boosting everywhere,devils fuel FTW! Paul...

i know diesels make huge amounts of torque compared to their petrol equivelents....for example a engine from a 330d would make more torque than that of a 328i m52

remap both of these and which would be more powerful?
we all know where this leads but i think id favour a remapped diesel lump in some cases if the prices for the conversions were similar

i have both and have had 3 e30s and 4 e36s, e36 are very porely built by comparason to an e30, and generally worse to drive, i think e46s are better but the e36 is a shed

Any car that's not looked after is shed

With your words of wisdom on X5 gearboxes its advisable to not take any of your comments seriously like buying a TDS and fitting it into an e30

An e36 is more comfortable, usually better optioned, quieter, they rot less and far more economical and safer than any e30. They also handle better out the box

A 10 year old mondeo is better car than an e30

dont bother then ruin an x5, funny tho as ive an 06 x5 as well and had a 01 one before that!!! x5 gearboxes do not need oil changes ever, they dont have any pattern to fail all i know is ones that have been opened fail more than ones that havent, all my cars are maintained perfectly by me! if you love a 10 year old mondeo why not just buy one as there about £300

As for x5 gear boxes, an oil change does not involve opening the box. You dont even have to change the oil every year but there is no harm in changing the oil which is 7/8 years oil, been through 10's of thousands of heat cycles and would benefit from refreshing
If there is no pattern to them failing how do you know that ones that have been 'opened' have failed ?
On a used car, you do not know how it's been treated / driven / maintained

If you love your e30 some much and think its a better car then an e36 why do you drive a wanker chariot like an X5 ??

Plenty of places sell cherry (about 90pence per litre) and the chances of getting dipped in a car are pretty low, let alone a petrol car!

I bet an e30 with a m57 lump (out of the 530d) would pull like a train and return 35-50 mpg!

exactly, think that 'kos' has the dummy out, and i never started this thread it was just i thaught a good experimental idea..

The 3k+ that a PROPER M57 conversion will cost you would buy a lot of petrol..................

Granted, but it would be a beast... perhaps as quick as one with s50 or m62 conversion and more economical!?

Put a 335d/535d engine in...Twin sequential turbo with 350+bhp...
Now THAT WOULD BE FUN/ECONOMICAL

I'd still prefer an N/A Screamer though. A power range of only 2k RPM is a bit boring.

My M52 2.8 converted chromie was quicker than most S50 conversions, and I never had to put derv in that

I think a diesel engine would work out quite a bit heavier than it's petrol equivalent. Turbo and intercooler and other bits all add weight.
