you get a £60 fine and 3points..

thats crazy its making me re-think my tyres which were on the wheels when i bought them, they have a stretch on them but there brand new but i dont fancy 3points on my licence

Perfectly sensible in my opinion. If you're willing to compromise vehicle integrity and road safety for a faddish cult imported from the states, you deserve a hell of a lot more than 3 points.

yep its true, you can appeal it and do have a chance of winning it but if you dont you could be lumbered with court fees on top. All tyres have specs and ratings which includes wheel width so i suppose if your running tyres which were made for thinner wheels it could be dangerous

What tha fuuuck I just spend 250 quid on new black circles. Fuck that im not changing, they can suck it. I spoke to a traffic cop before, he said there was no law against it and aslong as the tyre is fitted properly theres bugger all they can do

Can a tyre be fitted correctly on a larger wheel than it was designed to fit?

I don't get it, they stretch because they don't fit properly... whats the attraction?

It stops flex in the sidewall making the car firmer and handle more predictably when sliding. 3 points is exsessive. What defines stretch anyway. Surely there should be a max amount and an ok amount. I dont have huge stretch anyway

People actually believe this guff? Having the smallest width tyre the manufacture recommends for a given rim with reduces sidewall flex, but given the amount tyre tech has moved on in the past 10 years the effect is minimal. Going down a size just encourages the tyre to pop of the bead when going sideways How you ever looked to see how much a tyre moves on the rim with lateral load.

Also just because a car passed an Mot does not mean it will not get points. MOT tyre tread is measure across the centre three quarters for a police check it the full width of the tyre.

If you get will points or not I think will be down the cops opinion, unless there a defined maximum angle of stretch.

The point it was road legal until what? This week? Whenever they decided to bring this motion in. A slightly stretched tyrr is no more dangerous than a normal one. Provided its not a ridiculous angle of stretch I dont see the issue. 215 40 on 9s imo is fine

I think it depends on the copper verde, sometimes you get the one whos power has got to their head and are on a mission to wreck some ones day cus their wife never come home last night.

The thing is if you get stopped the once, your going to keep getting stopped by the same copper and if you dont change your tyres points will just rack up. Plus you drive an e30 so you will stick out from the crowd.

My advise to you is run them but if you get done for them, change them asap thats what im going to do

thats my rears there 9.5 on 215s and my fronts are 8.5 on 195s

I think il follow ur advice. Im the unluckiest man alive so il no doubt get pulled by the cunt who just found out his wifes banging an e30 collector or something. My stretch isnt as wild as urs so il see how it goes. Plus out in the sticks here iv seen alot worse going around. Coppers arnt too bad generally.

There was a case on here recently where someone was the totally innocent party in an accident, and their own insurance company tried to reject the claim because of inappropriate tyre size.

No it wasn't to do with anything affecting tyre performance like stretch does at all; it was simply that the tyres were marginally outside of the arches, and although this doesn't affect the performance of them, it was sufficient for the insurance company to try to invalidate his insurance.

They do indeed Dan, as i explained to plod yesterday that my council plates had been through 3 MOTs, but the MOT is only their to make sure your car is roadworthy, those plates are illegal and if i see em again your nicked.

For a start they need to get mot and plod working together. One rule for all. If it passes mot...its legal. If the bacon are gunna have a problem then the mot centres shouldnt be allowed to pass it

They can not give points for a stretch. There is nothing illegal about it. But you can be forced to have the car re MOT'd if they believe it's un safe.

If a manufacturer says its with in their recommendations to fit a 205 40 on a 9j then that's that. There is talk of strickter legislation on it, but as its only a small percentage of cars that's actually have stretched tyres fitted its not going to be cost effective.

Personally I see more cars with unroadworthy bald tyres getting away with being used than cars with stupidly stretched tyres.

The mot is very missunderstood in my opinion. Without going too far into it, it just means your car met some basic minimum safety criteria on the day.

There are many reasons why your car may be illegal under road traffic laws which are nothing to do with an mot. Window tinting is a prime example of this.

The MOT test only covers a very limited number of points, and is more concerned with the deterioration of standard parts fitted to the vehicle, rather than illegal modifications that have been deliberately made.
