pulled over - illegal exhaust -

driving home yesterday at 50mph in 5th gear - nice and quiet minding my own business - going home after a long days teaching, next thing flashing blue lights etc etc - i was advised (which i suppose was lucky to only be advised) that my exhaust is illegal because i have changed the bhp of the car? he let me go without much hassle at all but just felt the need to inform me that my aftermarket mongoose was against the law :(

sounds like complete nonsense to me mate, or if there is some illegal doing on your behalf, the copper has done a lousy job of explaining.

yes an exhaust could be too loud, or it could pose a danger in terms of not being mounted/fitted correctly but to say it is illegal as it alters the power of your car sounds pure tosch to me.

What about the modifications to the police traffic cars? winkeye they ain't standard production line models.

Put it this way, in some recent copies of Evo magazine, there is a bloke running a Lambo Murcielago and he has fitted a tubistyle exhaust. There are pics of North Yorkshire coppers posing around the car to have their pic taken next to the beast. Pulled it over purely out of curiosity.

Think you have had your leg pulled or the bobby wanted to look at other things on your car and just needed an excuse.

I may be wrong but I'm pretty confident

:wtf:
Thats the biggest load of bullshit ive ever heard !!!!!!

Its not illegal to change the BHP of your car, if it was 99% of the cars on here would be pulled over.

The only way an silencer would be illegal was if it did not meet noise regulations, thats way alot of bikers have problems with rear cans, due to noise levels

EDIT: also the obvious blowing exhaust system......

I agree. hey copper :flipbird: hows that ?

The copper clearly had nothing better to do. As said, the only ways of it being illegal are too noisy or damaged/not fitted correctly.

As for changing BHP, its only against the law if your insurance are not informed.

Actually they are standard.

The ARU's (Armed Response Units) sometimes have beefed up supension depending on the strength of the make & model.

was driving down the M62 the other day, (going a little faster than I
should have been) I passed under a bridge only to see a copper on the
other side with a radar gun laying in wait. The copper pulled me over,
walked up
to the car, and with that classic patronising smirk, asked:

"Runway too short ?"

To which I replied, "I'm late for work."

To which he asked, "What do you do?"

"I'm a rectum stretcher," I responded.

The copper was surprised and confused. "A what? A rectum stretcher??

And just what does a rectum stretcher do?"

"Well," I said, "I start by inserting one finger, then I work my way up
to two fingers, then three, then four, then with my whole hand in, work
side to side until I can get both hands in, and then I slowly but surely
stretch
the hole, until it's about 6 feet."

Then the copper asked questioningly and cautiously, "And just what do
you do with a six-foot a a**ehole?"

To which I politely replied, "You give him a radar gun and park him
behind a bridge..."

Speeding ticket: Ԛ£60.00

>Penalty Points : 3

Court costs: Ԛ£45

Look on copper's face: Priceless.

Since when do volvo's come with aftermarket alloys and brembo's? ?

Granted the car I mention was on loan as a tester, but a good friend is a mechanic for South Wales Police, and he has told me the cars are not standard.

When i last got stopped, thecopper noticed a open packet of digestive buscuits on the passenger seat, he then seemed to forget what he pulled me over for and tried to book me for eating whilst driving !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I asked him if he wasn't too busy today which was abit of a red flag to the proverbial bull, he got on his radio, i heard him ask his sargent if he could write me a ticket, 20 secs silence then he warned me to be carefull in future then left. Arsehole !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been stopped by the police who were checking tax disc, i was then told my car was a ringer because the female copper could not find the chassis number which i showed her and she then told me it was in the wrong place and it looked like i done it my self, then she accused me of importing stolen vehicles, becuase my car is left hand drive.

She then radioed for traffic police to come and inspect the vehicle. one of her colleagues explained the car is from germany and this is how they are but she was not happy, i then waited 2 hours for them to turn up with the sympathy of about 5 officers telling me not to get upset, the traffic police turned up along with what i think was a some form of high ranked officer who looked at my car and then gave her an ear full to my happiness, some cops are good, and some are bad, its the luck of the day, as for loud exhuast i hope they never hear my one that i not long had fitted.

I have also seen a police car that is a Skoda Octavia, full body kit, loud exhuast in silver, and the engine sounds serious, and the copper drives it like a nut case, i was next to him at the lights on my moped and when the lights changed, he went for it, no blue lights, just mad speed, one rule for us another for them.

I say fair play to the police on the whole, they do a difficult job with often limited resources and have to play by a set of rules (or should do) in the pursuance of their job, when the thieving chavs etc obviously don't . I have first hand experience of Cleveland Police as I used to work as a police station representative for a law firm, so when little billy scumbag was arrested and said "I want my brief", I was the numpty who got dragged out of bed because my client thought it would be a good idea to drive the wrong way up the A19 in someone else's car.

As in all walks of life, there are good and bad police officers as there are good and bad people within most occupations.I think some of it is born out of the fact that people join the police force because they want to help and make a difference and soon realise you are doing the job with one hand tied behind their back.

Police officers are human beings too, we all have bad days and we all make errors. I have been pulled over on many occasions when I first started driving, sometimes for a spot check because I was a young lad in a performance vehicle, some times because frankly I was driving like a cock, if you are pleasant and civil you usually get the same treatment.

I certainly would not want to be a police officer, no sirrrreeee!

I can't believe he said your car was illegal because of your aftermarket exhaust, you should've asked for written proof in the law for this.

My opinion on the police, there's as many bent ones as there is good.

I was in my mate's standard 200sx a few weeks ago, 3 of us coming back from the pub, a police car was behind us and pulled us over, hmm what have we done? My mate's got tax, MOT, insurance etc etc.
Apparently he saw us through a small cellophane(sp?) bag out the window - good eye sight mate!!
Whilst we were all padded down outside the car, not 1 but 2 police cars pulled up seeing if he needed assistance - got nothing better to do then chaps???
In the end we all got warnings for posession of drugs - WHAT MATE.

If my car got nicked, yes I would phone the police but only for a crime reference number to please the insurance as I know the police round my way wouldnt give a sh1t.

Our police are completely useless arseholes and here are some examples:
- Neighbours house was being burgled, phoned police, was told they couldnt make it down for two hours. Neighbours house was cleared of all valuables and police never caught anyone.
- Phoned police to report someone with no licence driving like a complete arsehole and gave the police his address, police said "well theres not much we can do about it"
- Saw car being broken into, phoned police. After 5 mins of "are you sure its being broken into" they said they would see if they can get someone to look at it.
- Brothers car got keyed at Lakeside shopping centre on camera, the person who keyed the car then got in their car (on camera with reg showing) a went, police were shown the cctv footage and said "well its too much paperwork to bother with".
- My brother stopped to help at the scene of an accident, other person had driven off leaving this injured person alone. When the police arrived they paid no attention to the injured person but instead tried finding something wrong with my brothers car to give him a ticket.

These are just the things I can think of off the top of my head but this is why I have no time for the police and definately NO RESPECT. The police around my way really are FCUKING USELESS.

Another here that's not a big fan of the police, a couple of years back my other half's brother shot himself in the head on the night before his 21st b-day, the police were first on the scene and stopped the ambulance getting to the house for 48 mins, when they finally got there, he was taken to hospital and spent 2 months in IC in a coma before deciding to switch of his machine, to add insult to injury, they really stirred things up when it came to finding the cause of death.

Ok, heres my "fooking gits" story....

Around Telford, the police regulary run the ANRS to catch tax/insurnce dodgers and the like. I have had my 325i since february, and i have been thru about 10 - 12 ANRS sites, no problems as i am fully legal. now back in mid augsut, they had an ANRS site near to my home, drove thru it, and i get pulled over, ok, i thought, nowt to hide here.. First copper came to me asking to see tax disk on car, so he checked it, i asked him why i had been marked to be pulled over, he said the car is marked as having no insurance, ok i thought, while the first copper was checking my documents, i asked the second coppper the same question, why pull me over, his reply was, the car has been involved in a fail to stop.

This carried on for four weeks, i was pulled a further 3 times, different reason every time.

And people wonder why the police have a bad rep ?

I know they're doing a hard job and I wouldn't do it. Mainly because of my views on drugs and I'd have to shop half my mates. The police round our way are alright and I don't know anyone that's had any unwarranted grief from them. But that above is such a pile of shit it's a disgrace and tantamount to harrassment. Then people wonder why the Police are disliked.

Well said.

It seems from the posts that it's the south eastern areas that seem to have the most trouble.

If you really want to attract the attention of the law do the following:

* Tint your windows. It's dubious in a limo but downright laughable in an ordinary car. Also, it looks like you have something illegal to hide.

* Put illegal no. plates on. They're not big & they're not clever. You know they're dodgy so why do it?

* Put a silly drainpipe backbox on. It doesn't add power (quite the opposite) & makes you look a complete prat.

* Drive around like you're the next Colin McRae. You're not so don't try.

Contrary to popular belief, the police really do have better things to do than piles of paperwork resulting from giving a punter grief. Keep a low profile & if stopped don't get lippy.

But you and I both know that some people cant help but do all of those things. Ive never had any real problems with the Police. MAte of mine used to get constant aggro, but he didnt help his case 95% of the time.

re : the exahust. Its only a noise thing in the UK. Modifications arent on their own illegal. (Engine mods ARE actually illegal in France and I think Belgium) Though you do need to tell your ins comp and them which I know many people dont bother with. Which "Technically" makes your ins void. Which makes the car illegal.

Maybe thats what the PC was getting at?

Check if it's on the police watch list. My mates car had the reg no. put on another matching car which was getting petrol then legging it. Eventually it was involved in a robbery. Luckily, he was out of the country at the time!

Nice example of how a topic can get out of hand quickly.

If i remember rightly the actual topic was a question as to whether adding an aftermarket exhaust and improving horsepower was against the law, the answer to which is no. I can only presume that the person who pulled you doesn't know their construction and use regs. As for informing you're insurance it's in your interest as if you don't it invalidates your insurance and might lead to a costly repair bill if you crash and they find out. Fact is the police don't need a reason to stop anyone, if you are driving on a road they have a power to stop you. Most criminals use cars to get about so if they are stopping law abiding drivers chances are they are also stopping those who aren't so law abiding.
As for the Police bashing if it makes you feel better crack on, not too sure what relevance it has on a site like this but hey, each to their own.

not all police are bad but with the runnings in i have had with them they have been useless.

I'll list what they have done for me...

my car was stolen.. I wasnt told it was, I found it and told them, it took them 2 more days to recover it, i wasnt told it was recovered, or where it was.

I was stopped in my BM for having a tinted windscreen. Yes I kid you not I got stopped.

I had a stereo stolen from my car, they didnt even bother to come out and take a statement.

I was involved in an RTA and despite me telling the officer that the other driver was on his phone he did not follow it up and he got off scot free, I had to fork out Ԛ£150 for a driving course.

so all in all I think my local police are useless!

I wont comment on my fathers problems... his car was alledgedly used for a hit and run?

1) A tinted WINDSCREEN is illegal

2) Are they likely to find a stolen radio? Time vs possible conviction remember. And how would the statement go "I heard my car alarm and when I looked out I saw a teenager running away"

3) If you were responsible for the RTA (which it sounds like) then they will prosecute you. They arent going to go after the victim. UNLESS it had a direct bearing on the event. So if you drove out of a give way into him, they wont care about him and will prosecute you.

Im not sure what you mean about your car being stolen. Would you expect them to tell you or wait until you call it in. :?

The recovery bit is again, not really the Police's fault. Thats down to their subcontracted recovery firm. Now theres a bunch of shady operators!
