325i is the ultimate. The only reason you wouldn't get one is cost; cost of purchase, cost of insurance, and cost of fuel.

There's only one way this thread will go so you need to get out there and try them both yourself and make your own mind up!

318is is a great motor, but if you can push to affording a 325 youll be kicking yourself if you go for the is then have a taster of the 25 afterwards. the IS is very pokey, but doesnt have nowhere near the grunt of a 25. no disrespect to the 4 cyl members on here, but 2.5 ftw :)

The way i see it is, Yes the 318is is a decent E30 being nimble with 140hp and decent MPG, but it will never put a smile on your face like a good 325i.

Ah,I am starting to understand things now, proper BMW's have 6 cylinders....odd thing is that the brand new 3 series that I have on order is a 328i,with a four cylinder twin turbo....

The other slight problem is that I need 4 doors, makes mounting the grandchildren so much easier, and of course the 4 potter only comes in two door form,I discover.
Perhaps an estate E30 is the answer?

An e30 touring is the answer to all e30 choices.

IIRC our very own Ratch's handiwork, haven't seen that for awhile, still v.funny :D

I'd have an iS as a daily over a 325 anyday (wouldn't even bother owning a 320! No offence).
4pot just doesn't offer the smile factor necessary to put up with running these archaic things. 325 minimum (forget 320 ever existed- they are there to supply engine blocks for rebores!) 8)

Of course if I were to have one of these as a daily also, it still wouldn't be an iS as I'd prefer to have a Touring for practicality.

If I had to own just one E30 car it would be something like Simon's C2 Touring- best of both.

318iS are aimed at Twinks.
Ron Jeremy owned a 325i

Go figure :D

Oppps,poor choice of phrasoligy!

I should have written,'stuffing the rug-rats into their seats in the rear of the car'!

Be even easier if their damn father would buy his own car.

Lively forum, plenty of quick answers, and even some sensible advice.

However,as this purchase is intended to be a 'cheap buy' to use about the urban environment to keep the above-mentioned sticky fingers away from my decent BMW's,I think that a smaller engined tourer may be more fit for purpose.
