as above guys what do we think , do we think e30s are becoming worth more money ??
just thought id start a debate hehe....

The same debate occurs every couple of months. The consensus is that unless you've got a pristine example or an M3/Hartge/Alpina then not really.

Second hand parts are starting to get more and more expensive, which means more will be bought to frag, when they're gone, the prices will shoot up, but there are still so many turds out there that need 'putting to rest'

Certain models will always hold value, but standard ones, no one wants to pay high prices for shiiters when they can probably throw a little more in and get something nice...

Sports can always get good money but again, depends on the condition. Personally, I think they are very much over priced but thats just me... I would rather spend 2k less and get a very good example standard car

scrappers have got a lot more expensive yes, people look to be dreaming with some of the prices they come out with and wonder why nobody buys there cars apart from that no not really

imo.. the e30's are not ready to rise in value until the old turds come off the road and laid to rest. once that happens they will all rise in value, how much will depend on model and condition. over the last few years ive seen fewer and fewer e30's on the road but they are still very much desirable, they will get there.. another 10 years and clean e30 will be worth lots of ££££'s...

No rust on mine either but i have removed it and waxoiled the vulnerable areas more than once.

Regardless of what they are worth, penniless folk will still continue to run them on a shoe string budget and expecting them to run like a Swiss watch.

So IMO the good one's in 10yrs will command a premium, but will most see the next 10yrs ??

Mine has no rust either just the engine bay and odd bits need tidying up, all credit to the original owner who I bought the car off kept it garaged since new and yes I am keeping her a spoilt garage queen!

That's bang on that Kieran, you can't keep a sport or an E30 in general for that matter as an A1 example if you don't take the "want for nothing" approach

with the market on its arse at the moment nothings worth good money, ive been trying to sell my cab for 3 months and have had very little interest let alone anyone come to have a look, and its not a shitter and is priced to sell.

Very tidy low owner original pov spec stuff is starting to go up in price I have noticed

I am still keeping an eye out for decent E30's all the time. Good ones are still not quite up there quality classic prices and buyers are getting thin on the ground.

Seems there are 3 catagories atm.

Turds full of rust that you cant shift for much more than above scrap price. Unfortunately a few semi decent motors fall into this group too. Cars that might only need a grand spending to make them mint are worth under £500.

Honest originals: Low rust and still original spec with decent history behind them. This will also include cars that have had a good amount of work already put into them £1k-£2k

Then we have the concourse minters and council wannabe's. Mint original cars that need tiny amounts of work and stupid plastic bodykitted "i feel sorry for this poor car" type of motor. Both have had thousands spent only 1 is worth the 4k-5k price tag.

Over 5k is reserved for very rare models, very special motors or from dealers that are way over pricing.

Which is odd as this leaves a void of pricing. £500-£1000 you have either got a bargain or paid way too much. the same with £2000-£4000.

At least this is what i have seen from my very limited experience.

Edit: i should also add that we all think our cars are worth more than they really are.

Fair points Kolee but a car is worth what someone is prepared to pay for it and mint examples will always be desirable and paid top dollar for

After 7 years and 40K I sold my M3 for £4K more than I paid!

(I didn't turn a profit though. Maybe just about broke even as I'd spent money on it over the years)

Theres another category missing here, the big history big milege examples that have never been restored just maintained whether it was a whinning diff or welding the front floor pans they get the work done and keep on going.

They make up the bulk of cars on this forum.

mine fits in here perfectly too. 175k FSH but i thik it fits into the 1-2k cat tbh.

i fail to believe this whole theory of there is an army of sh!t scrappy avoiding E30's out there. None of them got this far down the line without some maintanance. They go sh!t when this stops.

Its cheaper to run an e36 as a banger now by a mile. So all this real crap has long gone. E30 numbers are well down on 5 years ago even. I can tell that by the lack of cars being broken on here.

i remember once 5-6 318iS were being broken at the same time on here once!

Demand for the cars has dropped too now that running an old car is so expensive.

Quite the opposite!

E30's are still being broken and its rare for one to get weighed in complete.

Demand for certain parts is even higher due to rarity compared to 5 years ago.

IMO I think they are. A few years back I was buying decent e30's in various models for no money at all. The same (and I mean the exact same cars) cars would sell for at least double what I paid for them today with the better examples fetching much stronger money. In the same time period the amount of scrapped cars has fallen drastically, once there were loads of them in the scrappy and in the last three years...four E30's in our local scrappy.....an indication that they are getting harder to find. The laws of supply and demand will eventually come into play (once , as mentioned above, the worst examples are deemed beyond any more economically viable maintenance) and the better cars will, and do command better prices.
Look at the price of M3 E30's....almost tripled in the same time frame. Same applies to 325is' in mint condition. They are also starting to appear on more upmarket classic forecourts, and taken more seriously in terms of being classified a a classic.

I'm sure you lot are much better qualified to comment on the UK market than I am, but I can assure you that E30 prices are definately on the rise here in Germany. It's becoming quite the cultcar!! Obviously M3's, Alpina, Hartge etc is getting VERY expensive, but also factory M-Tech and clean standard cars with good his history are starting to go for rather strong money. Only the real crap is still cheap (and always will be...).
I recon the market trends for German classics tend to start in Germany and then spread to the rest of Europe from there. I saw this happen with the 02's several years back. The prices rose in Germany some 2 - 3 years before they followed in the rest of Europe. The same is going to happen now for the E30. So hurry up lads - snap up all those good E30's in the UK while prices are still low(ish)!!

Of course prices are rising on good examples- 6yrs ago when I bought mine, 10K for a mint Sport or 15K for an M3 would've been ridiculous! This is only 6yrs ago. Of course you can still buy shitters cheaply, but you don't see many £200 E30's with T&T floating about for sale any more- they'd get snapped up to frag as the parts are in demand. You could buy a Sport for 1K and get your money back if you fragged it!

i hope the price rises my sport owes me around 11k now., and i know i want a set of bbs split rims next, these cars are like moneyboxes with a hole in the bottom of them lol but atleast i know the car doesnt have a spot of rust on her and paint is perfect like factory.

See this lot (and I mean all seven of them)? I paid £2000 for the lot (bought seperately over a period of time) a few years back. Sure I did a lot of work on them but there's not a chance in hell you would be able to do that now.
