Can it be fitted to any model? And is there a decent guide anywhere?

Yes, this is a good e30 toy, esp. for automatics.
For a manual, make sure you get the clutch switch.

Also if the get the kit from a LHD, (US or Germany) you will have to modify the loom to fit a RHD

Thanks.

Will a kit from any e30 fit any other? i.e. could I get a 325 kit and stick it on my 318iS?

Will be doing a lot of motorway mileage come September so will definitely be worth it,

need to double check that.
The M42 TB has a different alignment to an M20, so the Bowden cable may not fit...

I will be down the garage later and confirm

If not is there a kit that will fit? Doesn't have to be from a 325 (it was just an example)

Original BMW E30 cruise control can be fitted across the range you'll just need an alternative bowden cable on your 318is, I'm sure I've heard of using an E36 cable on the E30 C/C actuator but you may be able to use the original. IIRC it was an option on all E30's but can't see it listed for the 318is?

Hopefully Mark will come back saying it'll fit straight on :)

If you do any miles it's a great extra to have especially on the motorway

when i looked into fitting it to my IS, i discoverd that the 318is was never avalible new with cruise, so you need a few e36 m42 cruise control bits for the throttle housing etc iirc.

Did you get around to fitting it? If so do you have a parts list?

Apologies.
I couldn't get in to the lock-up today for a pic of the M20 cruise cable.

Seems like you got the info already.
The key is to get the correct Bowden cable that works with the M42 throttle body.

what side does it go on ?

sorry for sounding cluess, but ive never driven with cc

so your driving along at 70 on motorway, think cc....do you just flick the stalk up/on , and it cuts in and will just cruise constant at that speed ? i just wonderd as i havce no idea, if you break or slow down/push clutch in or anything, will it automaticly turn off or only when you move the lever back ?

It will stay switched on at the set speed (it's not adaptive CC) and will cancel if you hit the gas or breaks

There are two versions, the later has accelerate & deccelerate on the stalk which is really useful for adjusting your speed while it's on. The stalk is fitted to the left of the steering column below the wiper stalk vvvv (not the best photo but you get the idea)

Image

To set it just flick the stalk up and it holds whatever speed your at (30mph and above) When fitted properly there is both a brake switch and a clutch switch (manual only) so that if you touch the brakes or clutch it disengages the CC. You can also turn it off by flicking the stalk down.

Modern systems are somewhat different to the type that was fitted to E30.

In general, you drive up to the speed you wish to travel at,engage the thing and take your tootsies off the pedals. You can then vary your speed by raising or lowering the set speed with the cruise control.Touching the brake or clutch pedals will disengage the system, you can then 'resume' the set speed by operating the control.

I use cruise whenever possible whilst working, saves me the effort of holding the gas pedal at the truck's limited speed, this is one reason why us truck drivers hate car drivers who overtake us and then slow down..... winkeye

So if you have it set so say 70, and hit the brakes, then reactivate, will it automatically accelerate back to 70?

That's right!

The modern Mercedes trucks I drive whilst working are even cleverer than that,I can come off a roundabout 3 or 4 gears down the 'box, engage cruise, and change gear without touching the throttle, the electronic's take care of the engine speed matching for me,going up hill with cruise engaged,it even blips the throttle!

Dead easy, hardest part of my job, where I earn my pay,is reversing the thing accurately onto a loading bay.

Yep and it's a wierd feeling as you feel the accelerator pedal move on it's own, made me jump the first time :D

edit **I must learn to type quicker LOL**

Not so.

If you accelerate the let off so the speed drops, it will continue to hold the speed it was set at.

Modern,'fly by wire' systems, you do not feel the pedal move!

Just to confirm...

The M20 actuator and Bowden cable have a square lug to hold the cable in place on the TB. Also the Bowden cable cannot be removed :(

This will not fit the M42 TB which has a round securing lug.
The later e36 cruise actuator will work with an e30 318is, just got to modify the electrical connector.

Let me know if you want any photos.

There are two different versions the early which is a basic cruise on, cruise off with resume speed IIRC and the later which has these functions but also has the option to accelerate and deccelerate. Both versions will fit all E30's but will need the acuators bowden cable modded to work with the 318is.

People have in the past done this, have you been on that M42club or similiar website? the answer will be on there.

Just found it http://www.m42club.com/forums/
