Is it just me or...........?

Just interested in zoners opinions on whether an e30s cluster instruments should be sold on the zone. I was thinking that it is making it a little too easy for people to clock the mileage. This would be easy to spot if the car comes with full history but could make it a minefield otherwise. I know should buy on the cars condition. Any thoughts

I would hazard a guess that over 50% of the cars on the zone have a mileage that isn't true. You don't buy these cars for mileage anyway to be honest.
I see your point, in theory it's probably not wise but on the grand scheme of it I am only bothered about bodywork corrosion not mileage personally.
I have a spare set of clocks that I messed about with and its so easy to change the mileage, I have never attempted it before and am not a mechanic or in the motor trade and all I use was a small screwdriver. These clocks are not going on a car by the way!

Given that any roadworthy E30 will arrive with a computer backed MoT certificate giving the odometer reading at the last Mot,and that earlier MoT's can now be accessed online,I fail to see the OP's problem.

doesn't mean the mileage is correct though.

According to my car it has 47,000 miles.... (New clocks)
Previous mot's back up the original mileage though. 127500 ;D

As long as the owner documents the clock change and declares the mileage before the change no issue.
in any case, I'd walk away from any car with NO paperwork supporting some kind of mileage unless it was a breaker.

very ture, both my e30s have been clocked, its clear in the history. the fact the SI boards fail dont help.
My Sport is well into the 200k category has 142k indicated and my 44k touring is actually 85k-90k with proof of instrument cluster change in the history. had a brand new unit with 0 miles fitted

I suppose condition is if the first and foremost to buy on especially if backed by the correct history. Tampering with the mileage is probably just as common for cars on limited mileage as well, an acquintance of mine used to do the same with his cortina.

way i see it - a nice e30 - higher genuine milage with all history to proove/back it up=nice hoenst car
or exact the same car/metal, with 50/80k less chopped off, history thrown away, so a low milage disshonest car
its a bit silly really isnt it, all your doing is ruining a car, and because its less milage ,but no history- means your not going to make more money anyway, coz the buyer will be aware and half expect it not to be genuine

mileage really doesnt come into it as a priority when buying a old car, its all about condition, i wouldnt even be put off by +200,000 miles end of the day if a cars managed to do that many miles and still is in good condition its been looked after. Ive had a couple of genuine low mileage cars that have been much worse than a well used alternative.

To answer the original question, yes clusters should definitely be sold on the zone, and elsewhere, as replacements are a cheap way of addressing the common problem of leaking SI batteries.
As already stated, it's a simple job to clock an E30 in any case.

Fair enough, if a car is going to get clocked its going to get clocked. Just got myself a new drill and my e30 now has 3000 miles from new but the previous owner didnt send the history to back it up as the one lady owner promised. Honest guv!

I think it's fair to say my car hasn't been clocked
I could wipe off 100k and no one would be any the wiser, but it's swings and roundabouts in terms of value, selling now with all the history and all the miles it's probably still only fetch the same money with 100k less and no history.
