I am starting this chat topic just to see how many cars here have a sunroof and what is your opinion about it? How often do you use it and how important is to you?

My car has a manual sunroof, I use it in summer mostly, but even in winter on tilt position :)

If it wasn't for the sunroof there would be a lot more E30's left...

I never use mine neither does my other half, it gets opened now and again to stop it seizing up but that's it. I just stick my AC on if it's hot :D

Sunroof FTL! :td:

My chromie doesnt have one, my E30 before didnt have one, but my track E30 'did' so I cut it out and welded it back in :D
My previous E30's had sunroofs and it was all bad, they both leaked and gave grief.

Solid roofs and aircon FTW

Sunroofs? :hammer: :cheese:

It raises your centre of gravity, it makes your shell less rigid. It leaks, makes your car rust. They are terrible!

I have NEVER used any sunroofs I had on my cars.. beyond opening them in my early motoring days to see what would happen... My life wasn't improved! Some air travelled behind me, my perfectly coiffured hair got defiled and my car slowed down.

My two chromies are without sunroofs and if I hadn't have found them, I'd have paid 1000 english pounds sterling each to have the roofs re-skinned. I was genuinely considering it.

To all of you who enjoy your sunroofs... How? I don't even get it!

As you can see, I feel ridiculously strongly about this subject!

I don't get much rust problems here so thats not really an issue, and my chromie is for cruising, not thrashing so I don't care about weight or rigidity. The problem is that it's usually too cold or too hot to use it much, but on the odd weekend country b road in spring my son loves it open to see the trees and sky and get some air in his face ! Annoys me that the liner is unstuck and vibrates on the motorway though.

I much prefer a car with a sunroof, they're fun to hang out of, good to take photos from, useful on really hot days, a handy escape hatch for parking in narrow garages, and lots more besides.
I'd love to get a sunroof installed in my E30, but I don't think it's possible in a convertible.

The thrills, excitement and dreams of a ten year old standing through the sunroof of a 3.0 Capri whilst being taken abroad for the first time cannot be understated. Just think of the fun thats being denied due to concerns over a relativly small ammount of weight, to reduce tinkering time by an hour a month.

I love em, but them again in 18 months I've had no issues with mine and for reasons unknown its in great condition that'll last the next 15 years with only a days tlc to clear up a little surface rust, prep and paint.

i like a sunroof.

my current e30 had virtually no rot in the roof when i cut it out so not all of them are rotten.

I love sunroofs, that could be due to owning a convertible too.

mine was rotten, so I replaced it with a fresh mint panel...no problems now!

can anyone explain what is the real purpose of sunroof considering it was a pretty popular option for mid-late 80-90' car's?
What benefits are when fully opened/tilted?

I couldn't be without a 'roof.
Apart from when it's well below freezing, or really bunging it down with rain, mine's always tilted. :D
Mind, I'm a lot happier now the metal panel has been replaced with a glass one - as someone said earlier in the thread; loads more light in the car. I can't see the point in having a metal sunroof.

Me an amateur?!!? I took the f*cking seat out, put it next to the car, had the passenger door open and nailed her in broad daylight with people walking their dogs and students riding their bikes to college- ain't no amateur sunshine winkeye

Sounds a bit perverted to me, taking the car apart just to poke a bird :)

Do you put sheets down, wear rubber gloves, have antibacterial spray in the glove box, weird shit like that? :)

did e30s come with tilt-only 'roofs? mine ony tilts, and being steel it doesnt do much besides drawing petrol fumes into the car at slow speeds. Glass roofs are nice on certain days but I'd always prefer a flat panel to be honest

Something wrong with your sunroof then as all factory E30 sun roofs tilt and slide.

+1 for the sunroof fans.

Had one on both my E36s (the E30 is a cabrio). Excellent feature to have imo (if it works!).

All the talk regarding the compromise in stiffness is very much academic and will not affect 99% of the people 99% of the time.

I prefer windows and sunroof open on a summers day, than aircon.
