I can't help wondering how much the insurance people'd offer me for my car if it ever got written off... Has anyone got access to the figures they use?

Pretty sure I won't like the answer, but maybe it'll convince me to get an agreed value sorted!

Cheers :thumb:

When my car had its rear quarter hit, that classed it as a write off :x

After informing them of its rust free body, 89K, FBMWSH, they kindly offered me Ԛ£650 for it

Naturally I told them were to shove it and we finally agreed on Ԛ£1100, I bit more like it!

Insurers write a car off if the cost of profesional repair using new parts exceeds about 60% of its book value.
How they determine that value, I don't know, since most "books" only cover cars up to ten years old.
What would really shock some of you is how little damage that is, and not all insurance companies will let you buy back the salvage, even though you could repair it yourself for Ԛ£50.
Makes some good bargains for me though. A tourer I bought recently had a brim full tank of petrol and two brand new 15" tyres. That alone was worth more than what I paid for it!

Yeah but even with agreed value they try to shaft you. I've got the Rieger insured for Ԛ£25k. I had to get BMW car club UK and a independent valuer to agree it was worth that money, which they did, but my insurance is still trying to say the car is worth Ԛ£19k. It stands me in at well over Ԛ£35k, so Ԛ£25k is a fair deal i think, but their excuse is, it's worth Ԛ£25k with the ICE, but as they dont cover ICE, it's worth Ԛ£19k. I've invited them to come and see the car in the flesh. We'll just have to wait and see what happens

I have a copy of 'The Glass's Guide' Car values 1987 - 1994 and modern classics, my copy is dated March 2003, so not really up to date!

They will use this as a first step to value your car, but the more documentation you have to prove the value the better.

For a small fee it's worth getting an agreed value, must get one for mine one day....

As soon as my sport is road legal im gonna get BMW CC to value it, as I dont wanna get my car munched and be offered a grand for it, when, by the time i've finished, i'd have spend 9k on it... that would be a bit of a kick in the scrutch wouldnt it!? :x

The amount you insure it for is practically irrelvant, as soon as you bump it they stitch you up no matter what. When my mate pranged his, he had to jump through hoops to try and get a decent price. In the end flooded their fax machine with pages out of the auto trader.....saying "you find one for that price!"
I fcuking hate insurance companies

when i write off my 320 touring ,they offered me the book price off Ԛ£400 for a g plate, i refused that and they then offered Ԛ£800, and i was allowed to take off my new ebc discs and pads and the three remaining alpina reps,i accepted that as i had only paid Ԛ£500 for the car originally. they will always offer the lowest valuation they think they can get away with, but will always come back with an increased offer when refused ,you can still push for more but you have to show why you think its worth it.
