ordered my z3 short shift kit the other day from the dealers and the guy told me next day it would be in, so i called into sytner to pick it up, already wearing my oily clothes excited and ready to fit only to be told by someone else that it wasnt in and it was on ''back order''!
he said there are none in the bmw uk and none in germany

, he was emailing them to find out how long it will take to arrive but has not rung me back today!!
has anyone had any experience with this so-called back order?
if so, how long will i have to wait roughly for my new toy??
im very buzz-killed by this, its not on!

Yeh, ordered a Pre-facelift rear panel for my cab., took the dealer 3 months to get, every time I enquired it was back order Germany-no date. I had to pay the £183.56 up front as well!

Ordered some Alpina Blue(Saphire blue met) touch up paint.
After they'd cross referenced the chassis numbers they said it'll be on back order from Germany.
Alpina sorted out the correct paint code PDQ via email, but it still took 3 1/2 weeks before it was in the dealers parts dept for collection.
I should add, that this was not Sytners but the Scottish Alpina dealers

107 days is my personal record for a back order part, no use when the customer chases me daily lol !
that was for an E21 mind.
its a situation that can only get worse as time goes by folks.

Its insane! I thought a z3 shifter would be readily available, just my luck cos if I had ordered it a few weeks ago when I had the chance (bought something else needed for the m50) it would have been in!
So really I'm going to be waiting weeks an weeks for something I've already paid for guys??

Why? You're ordering a part for a car that went out of production over 8 years ago. I agree it would be unacceptable if the part in question was something that was commonly replaced - wishbone, service items, brake discs, etc - but come on..... how many cars regularly get gearlevers replaced???

Don't know how to quote as I'm on my phone but stubeedoo, maybey insane is a little strong a word but 8 years is bugger all tbh!
And seen as they haven't even got any in any bmw in germany I think its quite silly. At the end of the day its a bmw regardless of age, and after touching a grand on this conversion and build including ordered things like alpine white spray, belts, pulleys, nuts, gaskets bla bla bla (all of which were not on stock file) and other parts for the e30 in general, all spent in the same bmw garage I thought they would help a little more. Hope they don't take the piss with it thas all

Eight years is the entire production run of many models; in car terms it's an epoch. It's so old, even its replacement has been replaced, so there's certainly no reason for any manufacturer to stock parts for it.

Be fair, a grand isn't THAT much. And if a part's not in stock, it's not in stock. Valued customer or not, what exactly do you want them to do to make it appear on the shelves?
Sorry for the sarcasm; I do admit it's a bit off, them taking your money BEFORE finding out there aren't any in stock/available, but at the same time, it's an awkward part for a relatively low-production car; you can't complain too loudly in this situation.

Be greatful BMW are able to supply these part at all, they don't have to.
Ford followers don't have this luxury and have to scratch around, even the reproduction stuff for a lot of classic/retro Fords are drying up!

ford don't take their past as seriously as bmw! Or bmws are built better and as a brand seeing its own older cars on the road ads to it reputation of well made tough cars

Ford couldn't give a monkeys about anything other than the cars that they are producing - trying to find any NOS parts for the older models is a nightmare. I restored a 1972 Mk1 3 litre Capri a few years ago and even trying to get the most basic of parts took MONTHS. Panels etc took years (literally) of searching. And once you found genuine NOS stuff, you'd find that the hoarder who had stored it in his garage for the last 20 odd years wanted a FORTUNE for it.
But where else were you going to go?
Hence why I'm into Porsches and BMWs now!

You try getting parts from Ford. All you can get for a 1984 Sierra for example is an oil filter, pads, some service parts etc. Panels, trim, all NLA and NFI. They, like most manufacturers have a policy of supplying parts for ten years after end of production and then it's the big f-off.
BMW's parts supply is nothing less than outstanding for old cars. Same with Mercedes and Porsche. BMW still supply exhausts, panels and radiators for E12's for example.
