*URGENT* E36 Rack, Powersteering pipes...

What sizes/fittings/length of pipe do I need to fit an E36 rack to my E30.

All I can find is that you need some making up...

Surely someone must know the length and the size of fittings...?

Wanna fit mine tomorrow and just goto Pirtek (open till 12pm) and say I need X pipe making up thank you please.

looked on the wiki, just says custom pipes. nothing specific of sizes, lengths and fittings.

Pipe 1 ”“ High pressure - 1 metre of steel braid nylon hose, M16 banjo connector at one end (rack end) with a 90 degree offset on the banjos, M14 banjo connector at the other end (pump end) - double check your pump bolt is M14 - i'm pretty sure they are.

Pipe 2 ”“ Low pressure (return hose) ”“ 1 x M14 banjo into 200mm of 3/8”a rubber hose, then stepped up to a”a hose for 1 metre.

I reckon that will be a good £100 bumming at Pirtek

Lee is that for an M50 fitment as the car this is going on is a m20b20 and it need to fit in the reservoir needs to be in the e30 mounting position not the e36 position :D

yep the above will fit straight upto the M20 setup (assuming the M20 pump has M14 banjo bolt?)

You just cut down the return hose to the length you need when mounting the reservoir on the engine leg on the n24v setup

the zone search is different from the wiki.

a 2nd search finds this, hidden in the tech help section.

I've had this for quite a while (can't remember where I got it):

The banjo sizes are different to beemerlad's description and I've not had any pipes made up from this drawing can't comment on if it's correct or not but thought I'd post it up in case it's of some use.

The place I got my pipes made up are in Doncaster and it cost me £60 for them, but they will take a few days to do them and post. This is their number 01302 746 969 and ask for Paul. They can take paypal.

You can do a bodge and bend the hard pipes from your E30 pipes using a blow torch to heat them up, but I wouldn't entertain it.

No heat used when I did mine. Pipes are way to thin for me to try warming them. Nice a slow in a vice with nothing but the big guns, all you need. winkeye

I'll hopefully have TUV approved braided or rubber pipes and full conversion kits after Christmas.

Until then.... Blow-torch and over your keen with a few apropriate sized ring spanners on th original pipes :D

funny how every one panics and complains about the pipes, my biggest problem was the steering linkage fouling the exhaust down pipes and locking the steering up if you went round a left hander to quick as the engine shifts slightly and was catching! i tried removing the edges off the steering knuckle which did`nt work, so in the end had to take the down pipes off and give them a little tap in with the hammer which solved it.

the way i did my pipes was to cut them off near the banjos i think i used the e36 pipes then they are allready bent correctly on the rack or near enough for you to help them a bit more then got some old hose pipe so as to get the lengths and the route i needed, connected them with hose clamps removed the banjos from the rack and the pump ,took them to the hydraulics place and they replaced the pipes and connected them up with the correct fittings

i cant belive either how much people are paying to have pipes made, i took my old banjos(3) and they connected them up to appropriate length pipes with detachable ends aswell so i could route my pipes through the gaps with out the metal banjo pipes connected and crimped the fluid bottle on for £25 and it took 15 mins!!

For what you saved in the pipes could have been put into a new set of engine mounts :D

Once the pipeworks sorted out,It's an hour/ 1 1/2 hrs to do the job, then get the tracking done.
It's not a difficult job

Ive never done tracking before but i have the tools at work (no lasers) whats the easy route to doing it? take the wheels off adjust track rod ends put wheels back on repeat repeat until done?

i also used the original pipes by cutting and bending, but its leaking at the pinion :(

Well im thinking for the MOT ill remove the belt and drain the fluid and run it as a manual rack so it gives me time to fit the '36 rack properly.

Just means poverty steering for a week or so lol.

Still gotta figure out too why my brake pedal is sticking down and not returning back up :-x
