Dash Batteries in The E30

Guys,
I am about to change the Batteries in My E30 cluster. It is out and all apart, it has the old Rechargable AA type. I i am doing this because the temp gauge is not working and also the econogage is playing silly buggers. the car has been sitting for sometime about 10 months.
I have a couple of questions.
1. when i replace them will they need to be charged before soldering in or do the E30's have some sort or recharging setup if so how can i check this is working.
2. will the batteries be affected by the heat of the soldering in.
3. i have seen a few guys nount these outside the cluster for easy access, is there much involved.
4. can they be replaced with the newer Lithium type setup.
Cheers.
Troy
