The Bolt on types are fine as long as there is a heat shield. You do get some performance gains through the rev range if this is done.

You can buy a BMC Carbon Airbox for the 318is which really works well.

Ԛ£135 from the Zone shop and its real carbon Fibre!

i am thinking of getting a BMC pan filter to slot into the original airbox.
But M5 is right the open cone ones are fine but they need heat sheilding.

Can you get those for the 2.5? Looks like it might be just what I'm looking for to fit the Sportster.

why in your opinion is pipercross better

I've got K&N in std box. I prefer that to induction kits. The gains are pretty small on a std engine either way.

i chose the pipercross foam /alloy filter to,i dont think its any better or worse than other filters on the market, just simply about the sound and looks, but then im not running a bmw engine in my touring so thats probably not helped you much :?

Any good reason BMC have "WARNING: This product is made for track usage only and is not intended by the manufacturer for use on public streets or highway." all over their site in regards to that carbon filter system?

only reason i can think off is noise, but then you hear loud boy racer cars with they silly drain pipe exhausts and they seem to get away with that :)

The best air filter for any BMW with a standard engine is the one that BMW put there in the first place. Just change it often.

I GOTTA A K&N CONE WHICH IS REALLY GOOD THROUGH ACCELERATION ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT WHEN ITS COLD GOTTA SOUGHT OUT HEAT PROTECTION AND CHANNEL FORCE COLD AIR TO IT WHEN DRIVING

ditto, if u want your engine to last!

aftermarket lets more air in and more sh!t from the road too. As u can't let more air in and keep the filtration level the same is how i see it

This is very true :notworthy:
But if you buy the K&N Panel filter (Ԛ£20.00 in GSF) then you won't have to keep buying filter's all the time, just clean it :D

I've stuck a load of holes in the side of mine :D Give's a nice induction noise (Suttle) and better throttle response :D

I think the reason for the WARNING sign is because of noise but most track's are only allowed 98db anyway, also as Simon13 said about shit from the road getting in alot easier with an induction kit as the track won't have dust and road grime as the normal road's we drive on.

I just need to make sure my exhaust at full power is less that 101db to pass SVA regulations! I would hope the output will be noiser than the input :)

The arguement of letting more dust etc in on cone/panel filters really applies to K&N.

Filtration materials have come a long way and the likes of ITG, BMC etc filter the air as good as any standard paper filter.

Panel filters dont work and thats why I dont really concentrate on them. I only stuck the BMC one on because people like the option of having something like this but I know they dont do anything.

My alpina 2.7 was on a dyno a while back and while it was on there I decided to do the test between a K&N Panel and standard - guess what......no difference at all whatso ever through the whole rev range.

Its more about not having to change the damn thing all the time and the fact you can just clean it.

Cone type induction systems do work if you have the right size cone and a good heat shield. Its not the actual paper filter thats causing the restriction but the air box design and possibly the cold air feed.

The BMC system is proven to work and they dyno cars to prove this.

The Civic Type R forum recently did some dyno testing and found the BMC to give some very good gains - more than what BMC quoted.

I'm running a cone filter... but with a difference, I've got intake ducting running upfrom my front left brake duct too under my cone... it does help with the cooling... I still need to make up a heat shield for my car, but I will do that when it comes back from the panel beater... If I were to do another filter it would be the something like the BMC Carbon Dynamics...

Good points, I want my engine to last thats for sure!
