M10 or M40?

How can i tell which one i have?

Trying to use that Sysadm dignostic program and not sure which to try?
will it make much difference?

M10 is Carburetta with big air filter box on top

M40 is injection with air intake box next to passenger head light

M40 is good, but it could be better. depends how far you wany to go.

M10 is solid and chain driven, just make sure u service your m40 engine and keep coolant in it.

Personally i think it's a good thing as mine is M40 but the old skool lads on here prefer the M10 as you can do more with a Carburettered engine.

im not 100% sure on this but i think m10 engines can be injection also

Yes wayne is right the are inj m10's and i have one!

What year is it?

1983-1988 316=m10 carb 1766cc
1983-1987 318i=m10 inj 1766cc (L-jetronic)

1988-94 318i=m40 inj 1584cc (motronic)
1987-94 316i= m40 inj 1784cc (motronic)
(can't remeber exact cc on m40 engines...)

M10 chain driven engines and the block was first developed in the late 60's and been delivered in vairous different sizes from 1.5-2.0. Was used in the 2002 turbo (first mainstream production turbo car) also the block was used in bmw F1 tubo cars of the early 80's. Some turbo ones were tuned to well over 1000bhp. . M30 (bix six cyclinder engines found in 5, 6, and 7 series) are basically an m10 and a half! S14 engines found in M3s also have their roots in m10s. Its an engine with a hell of a lot of history

Know problems with m10s, as they are such revvy little creature they tend to break rockers and they eat distributers.... but generally bullit proof.

M40s often seen as a step back for BMW, supposidly produce more power, but in a less revvy way. Engines are more compact and more suited to run with catalytic converters. They were an engine designed for reduction in emmisions, thats it.

Know problems, "bag of nails sydrome" hydraulic tappets get louder and lauder after 100 000 miles big money to replace. but if you can cope with the noise it will still keep going. Generally as strong a m10's though. Never hear of head gasket problems like you do with m20's....

Parts for m10's are about 1/3 of the price to m40s

wow i was right have to say my m40 is quite quiet not noisey at all

Oh yea there are a number of quite m40s around, they need frequent oil changes....and like to be looked after, thats why more m40's on the Zone are quite because zoners care about their cars!

Not all m40's are a bag of nails, but if your hear a rattly bmw driving aound its more than likely to be an m40!

m40's rule! i have one will post full spec on engine when i get home!

I've had both M20s and M40s,got an M40 at the moment.I miss the sound an M20 makes at high revs but I don't miss the poor economy.
