I started this thread asking the following..
Is the K&N better, I mean would you get gains? I am tossing up whether or not getting one.
Then I found this website...

Do you want less filtering? This is the only way they can give extra power, by filtering less air
Paper filter cleans the air better

So its a balance of power and filtering.... Can their be to much filtering?

Oem, but changed fairly regularly. Their efficiency reduces very quickly when they clog. K&n don't clog as quickly, but only because they let more fine dust through into the engine.

Have seen countless articles, sites and even TV bits that show the K&N and other performance filters as DOWN on power Vs stock.
Which is criminal and you have to wonder how the hell they get can even be in the market on the back of that.

i would not trust test done using some leaf blower.......i did some extensive dyno testing with a thread somewhere on here which shows that the K&N panel is measureably better than the paper in terms of power. The gain won't blow your socks off but it is more reliable measure.
I also always use oil filters from the dealer.

I saw an ad on a service station toilet wall of all places and it bow seems they're selling k&ns on their environmentally friendliness, becaus they can be cleaned and reused instead of disposed of.
But then I wonder how much more damaging a steel mesh and cotton plus filter oil and cleaning fluids is than a paper one made from sustainable sources.

Doesn't apply to E30's with their flap type air meter, but I'd be much more worried about the effects of K&N oil on a hot wire air meter than on the environment.

BMW have no doubt spent £1000's on the development of air filtering,
where as K&N have probably invested well over £12.50,

I've recently done some testing with a 318i (pbmw racer) with a cone k&n vs a stock set up.. the stock set up was better on my dyno. It also applied to the stock exhaust system too, was better overall over the other "performance" systems.

Neither of which surprise me in the slightest!

.
Just increadible. We are driving cars that chew through over a tonne of non renewable fossil fuel per year but saving 100gms of paper is the big issue. What a joke.

We don't save whales here, just drive e30's and spend money on them we shouldn't
