you would get fined up until the point where the plod can take the numberplate off the car and issue a q plate instead.

I roll German plates on mine had them on for donkeys now and no trouble (touches wood)
However I can tell you that no pressed metal plate is legal in the uk regardless whether or not it has a UK font or GB symbol on there.
One of the legal requirements for a UK number plate is that it’s of plastic construction which none of the pressed "metal" plates are.
8 time out of ten times you'll just get told to remove them, 2 out of ten you'll get a fine and if you’re really unlucky you'll get a Q plate on your car but you would have to have been caught several times to end up with Q plate or be right cocky coont with the copper
I reckon one of the main reasons I’ve never been pulled is the fact that my plates really do look German and a lot of coppers don’t fancy the trouble of dealing with someone who may not speak English, I’m not stupid though I realise its only a matter of time before one copper does me over
Once I do get pulled the plates will come off and become a nice ornament on my wall or be put on for shows but I reckon £30 for a year’s worth of my car looking funky on German plates is worth it

Are you sure? Last time i read the law, it said the background had to be reflective - it didnt state what material it had to be in. I never had any trouble with my street legal pressed plates i had on my old car.

i'm fairly sure the british standard which all legal uk plates must display only relates to the reflective material, not what the plate itself is made of.

They have the BSAU145a stamp on them! And the car passed the mot at a very "take no bs" garage last week with them on!

I think you will find this is wrong as when these cars where new they had pressed plates on and the law stands from when they are new

You think police are that stupid to not realise you are sitting on the right hand side of the car? More likely they didnt pull you because they didnt notice the plate

Corrected your post
Now for the real deal...
The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001
http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2001/20010561.htm
But bascially pressed plates are ok on cars registered pre 2001 so long as they are reflex-relecting (even serck plates

) you'll see this in schedule 2 part 2, the font still needs to be similar in size and style to the prescribed one though.
Also I've got no idea why people think that you'd end up with a Q plate as a result of repeated number plate infringments, but the dvla will withdraw your reg number from use thus leaving you with an unregistered vehicle and a whole world of problems should you use the vehicle until you get it re-registered, which potentially could see you end up on a Q plate if you have modified the car or can not prove it's age etc.

Dont think thats true, my dads e-type has a reflective vinyl with black letters stuck on the body, and so does the caterham 7.
I think it dont matter what material its made out of, aslong as its reflective and has the correct font
