m30 in 1602/2002

Hi guys,

I've been considering the 335 conversion for a long time now but have just seen a nice little motor that would make a cool car (and be easier to work on with less electronics at a guess!). its a 1974 2002. I know that the 2002 is an early M10 2.0 4 pot and I do alos know its possible to get a nice 2.5 M20 under the hood which woudl be much fun, BUT, does anyone know if i nice M30 would fit in instead??

Is the M30 block considerable large in external dimensions than the M20 and would the 2002 gearbox and diff stand a chance with M30 sort of torque or would that need to go as well?

One last idea, would an e30 M3 engine fit being the smaller 4 pot and does the m3 engine have the same block and thus the same bell housing bolt patterns to the standard 4 pot m10 bmw engines - also what sort of price is an e30 m3 engine??

Much food for thought so lets hear any idea... sound like a fun project or just a nightmare to do?!

Thanks for reading - Jon :)

e30 m3 engine would be no good jon, only 4 cylinders :teehee:

i'm sure an m30 would go in with enough persuasion. search on the net?

Been looking about Toby and the website that Andy gave me the link to with the S14 have a page about putting M20's into the bay and it is SO well documented, but that limits me to 2.5.... would be shamefully underpowered as a stealth track weapon, but it looks like there are some crazy close clearances just with the 2.5... GOD knows how those guys at AKG got that 3.5 in, I think i might invest in a nice new set of cutting and grinding disks, a BIG lump hammer, and while I'm there, a goood set of pry bars!!! hahah

I am sure I will be calling on the expertise of both you and Andy at some point if i can ever afford to get this off the ground.

Awesome pics, thanks for them... its all looking good for conversion, the pics have got me really enthusiastic about the project. just need the cash to get a good 2002 shell... and the time to get rid of those old motors that are kicking around... anyone want a K reg astra for Ԛ£100... or an M535 engine (as I have two)???
