318 iS Exhaust System Options?

Hey guys,
I've been struggling to find either cat-back, or full systems for my 318 iS. I've just been upto Janspeed in Salisbury and for a fully custom cat-back i'll be looking at £450 + VAT!
That's a lil over my budget tbh and was wondering what the most popular system is on here? I'm just after something that will make it sound a bit fruitier and perhaps unlock a couple of BHP (not hoping for tonnes!)
Any ideas or websites i can check out? Finding it hard to find anything atall!
Cheers!

you'll struggle trying to find a system for that car off the shelf beit OEM or aftermarket
best bet is to hunt around for custom SS system. janspeed are a decent company, a arguably more reputable than some of the powerflow/top gear outfits

Yeah Janspeed are do sell a quality product but i find it hard to justify spending more than half what i paid for the car on an exhaust! lol I'll see what next payday brings and then possibly get back to em.
Cheers for the links aswell, i'll check em out!

Have a look and see if there is a 'longlife' exhaust place near you, they do custom ones too. There's also a company on RetroRides who do custom exhausts cheap - e.g. £200-£300ish I'd have thought.

You should pay that £450+ vat, then i'll get my bonus...
Only kidding, I wish I got paid bonus. Sadly people do underestimate the level of work that goes into a quality aftermarket exhaust. That is 6(because it is built on the car) hours work easily to get a proper bit of kit with a lifetime warrenty. If it was Jig work, it would be cheaper, because it is far less labour intensive.
As said, you would be better getting an 'off the shelf' exhaust for it, I.E one that is made from a jig as someone has already done the R&D on that car meaning that anyone can weld it up in stainless from that jig. Problem being that not many people do an aftermarket exhaust for the iS as far as i'm aware.
Good to speak to you today though chap.
Jon
Janspeed.

Haha, that's clinched it! I'll be back round tomorrow so you can get your Commission!
I think you're right though, i wasn't aware of how much does go into making a fully custom system. Also i have a friend who had a similar system made up for his '58 plate MX-5 which was considerably cheaper, i guess it is all down to the individual job though.
As i said, may well be up next month as it is bonus month! But as it stands, i paid about £800 for the car so pushing £500 for the system on this particular car might not be a good idea, especially since the thing could crap out on me at any point! Haha!
Cheers for your help today bud! May well be back soon!
Marcus

Do you think that 80mm will fill the recess enough and not look weird?
I've not got a ruler to hand to physically see how big it is. 80mm = 8cm = 3"ish? Is that about right?

Does the bosal system sound like the original? If so I may get one when my backbox finally dies.

if you have got the money, buy a genuine bmw one, my original exhaust was only removed about 10 month ago as it sounded raspy

mine was raspy from the center section, sounded nice in a wierd way, i changed mine for a stainless steel exhaust, but that got boring 6 month later and did my head in, so i bought a crappy bosal system,

I quite like the sound of mine at the moment but it is getting gradually worse and will probably become annoying on long journeys. Are Bosal systems not very good then?

just over 3", it bigger than a standard tailpipe. personaly i'd have a 2" slash cut pipe. a single 3" round may look odd

Just thought id mention my mate bought a really nice mild steel system from ashley for his 205 mi16, sounded really nice and unlocked a few ponies, he had to email them because they didnt list it at the time, but they sorted it for him in a week or so.
im sure they could sort one out for your car, it was under £200 im sure.

Cool cheers buddy, i had a crappy Sportex on an old 306 i had which looked ok. Was a 3" outwardly rolled so not exactly the same but not far off. I think i'd like a 3" as i reckon a 2" would look a bit drowned as the hole in the bumper is quite big really.

Just been looking at options for the i.S, and struggling as you've found!
Supersprint do a mid-centre section and rear box but its about £400! £200 for a backbox, but would require some sort of link pipe making I imagine...
Wonder if we could get a group buy going on a Jetex system?

^^^ That sounds like a good plan! And even if there aren't enough people, it's not an expensive system anyways.
Also, Jon at Janspeed said that the 318i S is a non-cat system, would that mean that with a free flowing system these become pretty loud lil motors?

Yes, they do.
I would be up for a group buy on a jetex or similar
Maybe someone set up a thread?

McDisco - they become VERY loud, depending on how many boxes you have. I have the front box and a cherry bomb rear on my exhaust and it's uber loud. Very free-flowing though! (mid box removed)

Marcus, just double check that yours is not a CAT model*, I don't think it was, but it wasn't up on the ramp to make sure. You should be able to check by removing the plastic wiring harness cover and seeing if there are 2 or 3 relays. If there is 3, it has a cat. I am almost certain it isn't as I couldn't see a lambda probe, but worth double checking for sure.
The Jetex is mild steel, but I am sure you knew that anyway.
*They did make some cat models, but they are few and far between.

That's cool, i'm not adverse to a lil' noise!
Hey Jon, i'll check it tonight. I didn't wanna get it up on the ramp and get your workshop covered in fuel. It's got a fuel drip at the mo when it's on choke which is a pain in the arse.
I'll pop the cover later and take a look

If you guys can get 5 or more people together I can do the Jetex systems for £162.56 each + postage.
But the onus is on you to make sure it fits your vehicle as it does state that it is for CAT equiped models...

As above no need for a group buy. And mine isnt cat equipped and it still fitted fine.

We posted at the same time, as you say, it is probably easier to just get it off that company. How much was the postage Smithysmith?
I may be able to do it without the group buy.

Says on the Venom site that there's a choice of tailpipes but states 80mm round for the E30. Do we know if that's the only one available for the iS?
