I found a mint 325i black, no leather, alpina's, ss exhaust, the engine splutters and wants to cut-out when started from cold.

Sport on the log.

realy depend on year miles history and condition. you say its "mint" but have you looked in behind the kit, front corners, under the fuse box, and the inner arches and loads more places..

depends if its actually a sport too, even if it says if its a sport on the logbook it doesn't necessarily mean that it is one.

As above really. What year is it? Tech one or two if it is a sport? Are they genuine Alpinas or Burger Kings?

NEVER buy a Sport, without checking the VIN out with BMW to see what it really is! There used to be no problem at all getting your V5 changed to whatever you wanted.
As for the engine fault; use it as a price negotiator obviously, but your description sounds like a simple fault with the engine temperature sensor.
Even if the engine is completely U/S, a Sport engine is just an ordinary 325 engine the same as found in any 325i.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread, but is a dealer original bill of sale good enough for 'Sport' confirmation to go on? This is what I went with...

Disregard!!! Have a Vehicle Specification Enquiry here from BMW. Might explain why the diff on this one feels better than I remember, maybe the last one was indeed a porkie pie...

The 'sport' was just a 'special' version of the 325i, dreamt up by UK dealers, with several option boxes pre ticked.

So why is it worth so much more than a standard 325i?

My 325i SE has the following factory options: Sports leather interior, LSD, Mtech suspension, BBS 15" rims, rear boot spoiler, sunblind, opening rear windows & shadowline trim.

I may well be wrong, but I think its essentially sport spec minus the bodykit, so they definitely exist.

One of life's mysteries. A car is worth what someone is prepared to pay for it, and for some reason there are enough prepared to pay a large premium for a 'sport'.

Sounds like my 325i tourings engine...hasnt stopped me clocking up some mega miles in it thow in a 2 month period. I blame the ht leads as you can see them sparking when its cold i just havent got round to changing them, i could be wrong with that diagnosis thow, it flies when its warm so not fussed.

As above ring bmw with reg or vin and they will tell you if it is a factory sport.

Black headlining and slightly different gear ratios are unique to Sports - when new you could probably have ordered any325i with both but I bet hardly anyone did.

Sport gearbox doesn't appear to be an option on the dealer literature of the time, neither does the headlining but I suppose if you were specifying these you would just buy the Sport. Fuel economy appears to be a subtle difference. I would imagine the Sport was a way of pre-loading a customer with options in exchange for badge. I'll put the 1980's brochures away now so that I don't phone the original buyer and ask him why he specced a sunroof and didn't spec leather!
