E30 Zone

My touring sailed through the MOT today, thanks to Adit tyres of Portsmouth (No job too small!!), who supplied 3 good tyres on Saturday, but the prop. Guibo was an advisory:-



It was that shot, I got it replaced there & then, only £20 from GSF, begs the question why was this only an advisory? I had no idea this had gone, no noises/clonking etc..

I had this part go on my tech 1 sport, planting your right foot with passengers made the whole car judder.

had this as an advisory on my e34 mot bloke said cant fail it due to not all cars have them like fwd gayness....

I cured the high speed judder I had with new Discs & Pads,but had no warning of the prop. problems

It's not a testable item. However the tester can advise anything they want. Be glad you had a good tester.

The guy wouldn't let the vehicle leave without replacing that part, trying to get at thing was a nightmare as well, glad i got it sorted though.

The guy strongly advised not to drive it any further, & he didn't want it to leave his premises,he couldn't fail it on that, which is silly IMO, if its dangerous like that, it should be a fail.

I'd of pay'd the M.O.T money and just left saying thanks i'll fix that at home then as he could not have stopped you. but saying that was a cheap fix anyway as long as his rate was not to high

Hes a guy I've known for years, it was a cheap fix, looking at the old one, I'd rather not take the chance.

MOT test criteria is shockingly basic, one reason I don't test anymore !

Im a tester and I agree with Ant. MOT standards are set to a level just before the scrap heap. If it works, it passes...

Things literally have to be hanging out there arse to fail and an MOT can only fail on a testable item. This item is not testable, therefore cannot fail a test, but the tester can inform you of any part or condition of the car through the form of an advisory

Another similar query to that is an engine mount. If its completely f*ck*d but the chassis area around it is fine, its a pass! The engine would literally have to be rolling around loose, in which case the tester could abort the test and you wouldnt get a certificate anyway

Why wouldn't you have listened to the mot tester? Do you know better than him like? He wasn't being a tw4t he was thinking Of TPS's safety.
The way it happened was the only safe way for everyone. Search the Internet for picks of prop failures. The mot tester did the only thing he could. End of.

I would keep an eye on it.. Seen GSF ones fail after not very long..

Is this a common part to wear out then ?

Is it something that should be considered for automatic replacement if the prop is removed or can you tell from looking underneath if it'll need doing or not ?

Most E30's will still be on the factory Guibo or a cheap replacement, If it is cracked or has chunks missing then replace it, if not then leave it be. Look up just behind the gearbox mounts before the heat shield and you will see it, you need the exhaust out of the way and the centre bearing unbolting to get it out though.


Mine was about £55 iirc from Cotswold BMW (called an Artic-Disc on the receipt)

Cheers. I was going to remove my exhaust and prop this weekend to drop my tank, but I've since been told that I can change the fuel pipes and breathers without removing everything, so I probably won't disturb it. Won't hurt to have a look though.

Especially if they aren't fitted correctly!
There are triangular arrows on the edge of the guibo by each bolt hole. It must be fitted so that each arrow points towards the flange that it is bolted to.
