Worst E30 manufacturer recall?

What with Toyota in the news, what was the worst recall on the E30? I remember having a radiator cap recall on my old 318i back in about 1998. Ever anything really bad on the E30?

And what would you do in a Toyota if it went loopy - seems whack it in neutral and pray?

I could never get my head around the way the braking worked on the toyota.
In order to create resistance to slow the car it would either feed the current back in to the motor the other way. (not recharging the battery)
Or automaticly drop down through the gears (if it has any) to increase the engine braking.
Either way i doubt it has much to do with the "brake peddle" there's a bit more to this story i reakon.
More likely to be big burnt contacts on the main power breaker

I think that the amount of reecalls for cars has shot up massively over the last decade. Probably lots of reasons. But 3 that spring to mind are. The litigious nature of society. Thanks to the Yanks for that little import! And ever more complicated systems on cars. And also manufacturers rushing out cars to the market that aren't fully developed.

There's already recalls on the new shape Polo's (daytime runnning) lights. Cars hadn't even been launched in the UK and we were doing the recalls!

They were thinking of re-calling the E30 due to it having the drag coefficient number of a barn :(

I agree, and it's not just cars either - look at stupid supermarket recalls based on one random incident from one consumer. All arse-covering, coming as you rightly say, from the modern claim culture!

And crap headlights, and twirly steering, and dim panel lighting, and too much oversteer in the wet, and...

If a company has provided something which is not fit for purpose, I want them to do a recall! Litigious society or not, possibly dangerous products should be put right by the manufacturer.

I thought the Toyota problem was the accelerator?

Can't check, because the website has crashed because of all the muppets checking up on Toyota, but recalls are normally only on safety grounds, and I don't think there was a safety issue involved.
BMW stood by the failing profile gaskets though, as they did with the nikasil issue.
The only safety recall I can recall on E30s was the coolant cap.
E36 had the corroding steering link on RH drive models.

i would use the magical device toyota handily fitted to the left of the brake pedal which disengages drive. i believe it's called a 'clutch pedal' hopefully one day other manufacturers will invent something so handy.

amazingly there's a second backup device in the shape of an ignition key. turning this anti clockwise will shut down the engine.

spaceage stuff 8)

The M42 profile gasket was probably the most significant and most damaging one.

It figures really as obviously the rare materials mined from distant planets still hadn't been fully refined to be used on the early M42s so the internal energy of the engine blew it apart.
