E30 Zone

Chatting with my bro in law about our Alpina touring, and more about what to buy next once its time to move it on. It would be sadly missed but we've gone in together on a wagon so we can have a few tasty cars over the years which can be used as a toy/back up car

If we added a bit more to the pot, we could get a tidy late 215bhp standard model in a nice colour like Lachs. What do we reckon? E34 M5 is on the list also (but the running costs will be much higher)

Hes really keen on the M3 and its the only
E30 i haven't had that should be on the list so i can see what the fuss is about! I think it would be an equal replacement for the touring? Its not something thats going to happen now though maybe in a few months, its a shame we missed the boat in terms of picking one up before the values went spastic




This one on pistonheads is sold but thats looks lovely to me 16inch BBS ftw!


What do we think?

I love the look of them. IMO what you need to be asking yourself is, if not why not?

As you say if its always been on the list then by moving on from the touring you certainly couldan't be seen to be trading down (no disrespect to the pina).

Then again if you think you will miss the tournig more than you will enjoy the M3 then stick with it.

Still, its an M3 and you definatly should lol!

You'll have the restored Alpina anyway so its not like your getting rid of having an Alpina altogether.

Get an M3 and you can always get another cheap touring at a later stage to basterdise with an S50 or something and you'll have the best of all things E30

if the wife would allow me to spend 15k on a weekend toy, i'd be there failing that, if i ever want a divorce......

i missed the boat too...went to look at a grey car in durham 93k 88 nothing to flashbut very tidy.. £4600 and walked away i'd just sold a 300sl and had the car beut wanted a red'un,never found it...always regreted it and would be worth a bit more now maybe £7k or more if you've got it to send crack on i say.

Do it mate but remember these are buzzy 4 pots that like to be revved to the top to get the most from them, not like the lazy straight 6, which is a lot smoother.

Also the M3 at the moment won't lose you money in the future it seems

I have never liked them , but this last year or so they have really grown on me !

go for it Si before the prices rise further , Lachs silver with 16" bbs is a very good choice

i regret not selling the sport a few years ago and picking up a bargain turd of an M3 from Scotland. It was an unfinished project and had had the scuttle done and a few other bits done like the inner wing and arch lips done but needed work still on the rear panel and needed two front wings. It was a late 215 car but wasn't anything special. It wasn't bad money at the time. It was only the insurance that was the problem and the risk that I could be in negative equity on the value of the car for all the parts needed to make it good if the prices didn't go nuts.

Now however, I wish I'd taken the plunge, even if it would have rendered me without a daily car for a month or two over the summer untill it was roadworthy.

Its got to be a goer! I'll ask pacerpete 2moro at the ace if scum like me can handle such a car! I think the M3 would fit the bill more, as my bro in law uses the pina late at night where you can play a little. Carbon airbox!

get it done si you know it makes sense, ive got a massive soft spot (or is that hard on) for the E30 M3 but it would have meant selling the sport and adding a fair chunk to buy one. Andyboy kinda talked me out of it as he said theyre the sort of car you need to be in the right mood to drive ie rev the nuts off it to get it to go and concentrate as youre sitting on the wrong side, no biggie when thats what you want to do but the six pots are more relaxing when you just want to cruise, however if you have one of each then its happy days.

I'm so sure you'd REALLY regret selling the touring. You are THE Alpina man, that car needs o stay with you. FULL STOP.

Buy the Bro in law out, let him buy the M3 (along with ownership of the bills ) and rag the arse off both.

I want to get one too at some stage and me being a stuborn fecker as I am, I'll eventually get one no matter what the cost

I dissagree, Si move the pina touring on and grab an M3,

oh and how much is the Pina ?

Andy is right, they are a pita around town, a pita on a back road, a pita on the motorway. They are dog slow under 3500rpm and with the dog box and lhd a pita to keep it singing to the right tune.. but when you get a clear road for miles, there is nothing better than enjoying it's superior chassis and feel.
Si, drive one and see but it really is a sunday car and not as useable as the alpina

Simon personally i'd keep the pina, its a rare beast, not easily replaced.

Rare M3's yep if you have 30K burning a hole in your pocket.

Mind dont take any notice of me, i buy moredoors then spend money on them

because a 4 pot will only go so fast, I want bigger brakes and more cylinders I think 3 years is enough ownership on one car too!

So stick the S50 anchor in it and sell the lump to some iS owner

Nah the engine is in the wrong place and it might be an s54 next anyway

I reckon he'd try persuade me to buy the S14 if he did
