318is chips

Has anyone got any experience of chipping the ECU in their 318is? Have seen a posting advertising chips for M20 engines with good reports from zoners for £25, does anyone know of similar chips for the M42 engine?
I have done some research on the internet and the best I can find are American and on ebay, they cost upwards of $50 and have no feed back as to performance.

i have one from evolve,
i think speedtouch on here sells is ones now.
the chip may give a bit better mpg and the rev limiter is lifted from 6.5krpm to 7.5krpm.
that's about it

I got one from Evolve. Here is the dyno plot

Still makes 136bhp but revs to 6750rpm.

mine seemed to make alot of difference after i chipped it, unless you but from evolve and speedtouch its hard to get a chip to suit the i.s though as theres 3 types of firm ware and its luck of the draw which 1 you have.

the best to do is to get a lightened m20 flywheel and a suited sachs clutch with the longer thrust bearing shaft
the chip does help but i only had my car a week before i chipped it so i can't remember much what it was like pre chip.

Mine chipped well, certainly a lot more punch, and @ BOB yes still slow
chip cost £30 off ebay.
shame you have lightened flywheel Magpie otherwise we could have had a chip challange tomorrow

I found the best thingto do with the M42 engine is to pull it out and put and M52 in there
On a 'less' serious note I had a chip in my IS and didn't notice any difference. I have no idea where the chip came from though to be honest - it just said 'viper' on it!

That looks pretty good Magpie, just a chip and flywheel? I'd be happy with that if my car had similar figures.
I had a Viper chip in mine at the start, swapped it with the standard one for the NCT and you would notice the difference then. Around town I found myself holding onto revs just a little longer before changing gear. Felt like there was less power lower down in th rev range.
I've a evolve chip in it now that I got the lend of to try out. Can't say there's a difference between it and the Viper one. More power lower down the revs and no limiter at 6500rpm. Be nice if it improves my mpg as well, 26average around town with the viper chip

Never thought about that as being a factor, even though it is. Another reason to be a little less unhappy
I've a K&N panel filter also as well as a BBTB no fancy flywheels though, not yet.

What diff you using Jozi?

Pretty sure it s a standard 4.27 open diff that came in the touring from the factory, it's not going to help the mpg either, I got it up to nearly 34mpg with lots of motorway and little town driving.

Ah, same as mine then. Although mine averages 35-38mpg weekly with mixed motorway and A-road driving and a little town driving in between. Bone stock M42 with a K&N panel and a dodgy exhaust.

it certainly is mick, although it did have the wrong facelift bumpers, has small lights and on a G reg so deffintly a Pre-facelift
zero rot in the usuall places, just some wierd holes in the rear valance
need a fuel pump, rocker cover and oil filter housing to get it fired up. will do away with the oil cooler till i know the engine is sound as they cost more
oh and 2x chrome bumper 2x wings a door, and a front valance and it will be complete ish

Alpine white II, has a roof but has a massive hole in it

and plenty of cuts, wierd wheels though, some sort of bbs replica things
has a shitty slush box though, will get that ripped out
