I think that age is the downfall of these engines. Provided they are well maintained, mileage is less important! Heads can crack at any mileage!

Hell! I do that sort of mileage in 4 months. Dunno wether it's a good thing (all that driving a real car) or a bad thing.......
I bought mine in March '04 with 107,250 on the clock and it's now got 128,250 on.

Let's face it.... A BMW engine with less than 100k on it isn't run-in.
I seem to remember in the '80's, at the begining of the Formula 1 turbo era, the BMW engine was based on a 315 (M10??) block. They used blocks that had been run-in on the road, in standard cars, for a minimum of 150,000kms (i.e 90,000+ miles).
This may be fact or fable, but I'm sure I've seen it quoted in books/magazines more than once.
Anyone know if it's true??

Wouldn't be surprised stuart!
My m10 feels much better at 125 000 than it did at 76 000 and thats not just the IS suspension....

I'm over 180k
It's kind of interpolated from the MOTs though as it did just over 10k miles every year seemingly, then some stuff to do with the speedo not working appeared about
4 or 5 YEARS ago and the MOT mileage dropped to about half.
Anyhoo, engine needed rebuilding at about 200k with the most worn components being the bearing shells.
The crank was spot bollock on the fat side of the tollerance, and the bores only needed honing. Other than that, it was just a new set of valve guides and a pair of turbos

101k for mine up untill I took the engine out.
It covered 70k in its first 4 years and then got tucked away by the 2nd owner and covered just 10k in 7 years. Then I got it and put it up to its present 101k before I took it off the road.

I crossed 114,500 last nite. But was on 62,500 when i bought her 3 yrs ago.
Personally i think that cars are better if they're used regularly. Had quite a few problems with mine at first but now she's used daily, it's just been regular servicing.

Have to agree with you there-if a car is used sensibly every day, and gets a right good thrashing every now and then, it keeps the car healthier
i'm on 92k is at the moment-got it at 87k 6 months ago. And I dont use it or work
