I've had better mornings...

Woke up this morning and headed off to work as usual. Turned out of my road on to the main and very busy road and my car just died.

Totally cut out and would not restart. It was turning over but not firing. Then of course the traffic lights changed and I was holding traffic up.

After most of the cars had tried to get round me fortunately two builders decided to jump out their van and help me push it round the corner (CHEERS LADS).

Called the RAC who arrived pretty quickly (30 minutes-ish). he had a quick check and suspected fuel pump or fuel pump relay but said as the junction was so busy didn't want to start attempting repair. Anyway he suggested towing it to my work as I work in a Garage (but I'm not a mechanic!!!) so we opened my tool kit to retreive my towing eye!!!! And I have't got one...

He then suggested he called a special tow truck as my car was too low and get it recover to my work.
After another 30 minute wait (which was pretty impressive) the tow truck arrived and lowered the flat bed. He still needed the towing eye to hook on to the winch but was just able to attatch it to some part of my suspension without it ripping my front spoiler off.
Eventually arrived at work at about 10.30 ish instead of my usual 8.00am start and got one of the mechanics to look at it and apparently its the fuel pump. So Mr RAC man was right. Got straight on to German & Swedish and I've got one coming out tomorrow.
Next up is to get a towing eye!!!

If you had given the top of the pump a good smack it would have sprung back into life!
No tools needed to lift up the back seat, and only the cross head screwdriver from the tool kit needed to remove the access panel.

What would you recommend smacking it with?

I thought this type of fix was the preserve of Morris Minor owners!

I think in this case the tow eye has perfect weight distribution for fuel pump knockage

Mine went again the other day. have a new pump courtesy of GSF. Mine carried on running for a couple of miles once I had belted it a couple of times, then died again but at least it was enough to get me to work before it completely went!
If you get the one from GSF the chances are you will need to recycle your old filter foot as they are not the correct fitment!

Something weighty that maybe leans to the left?

!!!!! No wonder some of you reckon E30s are expensive to run!! What's wrong with £5 from a scrapyard?
My weapon of choice for persuading a reluctant pump to run is a 12" x 1/2" socket extension.

Was about 15 last time I got one for the coupe, we hit the pump pritty hard with our fists last time and that did the job, well got us to our mechanic anyway

A stalled fuel pump will quite likely blow its 7.5A fuse, number 11, in which case no amount of thumping will make it start again!
Finding a 15A fuse fitted in position 11 is almost certain evidence of previous (or current, if you've just bought the car) fuel pump trouble.
