Anyone know where I can reasonable commercial insurance on my slightly modified 1990 318i touring which I use as a painter and decorator ?
My current broker just doubled my premium because I failed to inform them that I had gone over my mileage allowance and had forgotten to inform them ! A sizeable error, but I felt that was bit OTT.
Thanks alot
Derek

Hi there, try Carol Nash, I know that these are normaly associated with bikes, but I have my bike, my car, and work van with them. I would say that they are probably not the cheapest but still good in this respect, the reason I have stuck by them is, UK call centre, with good people on the phone, free brake down cover, and generaly good service. A few mates have been unlucky recently and their policies from "confuse my meerkat" or whatever were crap to say the least.

Thats seems a bit harsh, just because you went over on the mileage. I'm insured with Kwik Fit who are a broker, they are very good and always friendly as you have your own account manager person, so no messing around speaking to different people. Thinking about it, they haven't even asked me how many miles my car has done, so how would they know if i went over my 12k a year?!

My cabby has been on a limited 5K (summer/6 months)miles per year ever since I've had it (5 years), I've changed insurers every year, and no one has ever asked me for my mileage???

I believe mileage is checked against VOSA records now that it is recorded on the new-fangled MoT. Unless you are on a limited miles policy, it is unlikely that you will get shafted in this manner unless you are taking the p!ss or it's a big, complicated claim - if you've set up your policy for circa 3k miles per annum, say, and do 10k, I think they will tell you to get stuffed, and if the claim value involves 5 parties and £100k, they'll get right up your arsehole and inspect every hair. I would imagine commercial policies invite greater checks too as there i greater potential for fraud. If on a limited miles policy, there will almost certainly be some probing done at claim time.
My experience has generally been that projected mileage has an almost pro rata effect on premiums in private policies - basically, if you tell lies, you can expect not to be covered, insurers aren't in the business of doing favours.

you may well be better going to your local high street broker for a quote given that you want to use the vehicle for business use rather than just SD&P.
