Changing engine size on logbook????

Had a regular in work today that is building a blown model t ford. It was built in the 80's and regestered then as a 3.5. Now he has put 6lt motor in it. When he sent off to change the detail on the log book they sent him a letter saying the car has been put on a list and can't be tax again until it's been check and given an enginears report. Obviously alot of people on here have heavly modded cars so what's the actual crack with getting it changed. My car will be going from a 1.8 m40 to a 3.0 m50 but probs keep it 2.5 on the log book? Will I have the same issues when changing the log book. Need it changing as it's a crushable affence to drive the car without telling Dvla. Cheers guys

i didnt change mine with the dvla . i only declared to the insurer. mine went from 2.5 to 2.0 though and not a big jump up in cc. never had a problem even at mot time.

I had the same problem when I went from 2.0 to 2.5. I contacted bmw uk and got them to confirm the VIN and engine numbers of my car and the donor car/engine, I then sent this to the dvla and they were happy with that.
I would try just changing the details and sending it off first of all as it seems to be a bit if a lottery as to whether they ask for any further details/confirmation or not.

I emailed the dvla becuase they sent me back my v5 with it still saying 1.6 on the log book. I emailed them asking what was wrong and they said i might need to prove the engine number being in the car. So i asked them if the vehicle print outs of mine and the donor vehicle with a photo of the ecu (which has the donor cars chassis number) would be enough.... and got no reply

Then about 5 days later i got the letter saying about me needing it prove it in the several different ways

Iv used a letter from my mot place for this although i did give the dvla the engine number too,, the mot bloke just stuck his head under the bonnet to make sure everything looked ok and then gave me a piece of headed paper from his garage saying everything was ok, got the v5 after a couple of weeks

This is worrying me now. How will i prove the engine size to them other that the engine number. I can see me having trouble with this

vehicle print out from bmw of the donor car shows the engine number of that car, showing that the engine was originally from a 525i.

I would just try taking it it to your mot place, they are qualified people and if they will put on paper what your engine is then i would think the dvla will take that

no, you will need the chassis number to get the print out, not the engine number. They can't do F.A. with the engine number unfortunately.

Never informed the DVLA of any of my engine changes, since when has it been a crushable offence? As long as the car is road worthy, insured, taxed what is the problem?
Going by some of the DVLA rules and regs I would have to apply for a Q plate due the amount of components on the car that are not original

do you tell the insurance of the changes dan ?
just wondering how it would stand in an accident ?

Of course!
Why would the DVLA be involved in the aftermath of an accident?
At worst an insurance assessor would check over the vehicle on behalf of the insurance company, all he would be looking for is undisclosed modifications.

It's an offence not to inform Dvla of all changes. I was told today if you drive a car that has had the engine changed in size then they can take it and crush it. Not sure how or why they would check it though. Maybe just disclose it to insurance and not Dvla eh?

Who told you this? A DVLA official? The only reason they want to know of a change of engine is if you are doing them out of revenue, ie changing up a tax bracket and not paying the increased charge

when i did mine a few years back, i just sent off the logbook with the new capacity and engine number. all ok
more recently i did the same with my LPG conversion, now it says LPG / petrol in the fuel section.
tings are getting daft now
technically, with the amount of new parts mine has, it's also a ringer (well, it has been to the 'ring so i guess that's sort of true

)

When i went from 2.5 to 3.5 i filled in the new capacity and number on the log book and sent it off. just over a week later it came back all good with new cc & number.
This was in march
Im interested in this thread as ill be doing another swap soon and have heard a lot of talk about this shizzle with DVLA
Just fill it in and send it off, to be honest i think it also depends on who picks it up at DVLA, the jobsworth or the bloke who cant be arsed with the paperwork.
Good luck

My chromie would defos be a ringer if they start. None standard engine gearbox diff prop suspention brakes rad interior etc. Can't be arsed if it comes back with any problems as I have no info about the new motor

A ringer is a car with another cars id, not aload of non original parts.

true. still as dezzy said, mine now technically needs a Q plate as it's "a vehicle of indeterminable origin". s0d that though, who's to know!
no engine, fuel system, drivetrain, brakes, suspension, subframes or steering components remain. the glass is mostly new, as are two doors, both bumpers, tailgate, wings, bonnet, front panel.......
never realised i'd been that busy!
that just leaves two doors, the shell and the interior (well, most of it!!)
