I usually find the space between the door and seat a good place.

BMW suck at cupholders!
E30 - none
E39 - two front (fragile) two rear (always broken)
E46 - none in the front, touring has two in the rear centre armrest which are useless unless you're a rear seat passenger with anorexia.

An aftermarket drinks holder for the E30 would be great :)

You can wedge a can of juice in the right hand corner in the space behind ashtray and below heater control panel - it works a treat and doesn't budge under hard cornering.
Simples.

Not the best of pics, but the only one i can find.
Screwed to the top lid of the ashtray, and closes into a neat little box when not in use.
Got of U.S ebay about 3 years ago.

Would it not get in the way with a drink in it when you go for 1st or 3rd?

As long as you select gears nice and smoothly, the holder does,nt present a problem.

could you not have done it without the need to retrim the centre console by marking out the holes and making a series of cuts from the centre of the circle out to the circumfrence peeled the vinyl ? up and then cut out the hole and wrapped the vinyl round the underneath and glued it back on .. ? if you were putting some kind of trim ring round the top i think that would be more then adequate

If you can get one from a left hand drive e46 the centre console bit fits quite well and comes with cup holders.

There was a thread on how to do it on here a little while ago,

Problem solved!! Think outside of the holder and let the cup do the hard work - just drove 20miles, pretty hard with a boiling hot cup of coffee to sip along the way...

Image
This is OK...

This works like a dream, especially if you angle the cup's opening at 9pm, not 6pm - work slike a charm..... :D

You can get cheapo things from ebay that clip over the door card. Only good on the Mway though as they tend too fall off around corners!

Example:

Ah, interesting. I've just found what you mean on REALOEM. Our car has the phone console which isn't very useful because the 10 year old motorola is carp.
