ive noticed reading on this forum that you guys refer to different letters for rego -K reg and the like, what do these letters relate .to ?
here in aus we just have the same rego plates for basically the life of the car unless you put personal plates on it.

The plates in england are year related. So back in 1982 whent he e30 was introduced, we had plates which looked like
ABC 123Y, the Y being the age related letter belonging to Aug '82- Jul '83 year.
We then went to the style of plate you refer to.
A123 XYZ, the A being the age related letter belonging to Aug '83- Jul '84 year. and so it changed each year, B for Aug '84- Jul '85, C for Aug '85- Jul '86 year etc. etc. right through to L on tourings which was Aug '93- Jul '94 year.

There can be some anomalies. It only represents the actual year registered (i.e. put on the road). You could have a car built in say may '90 but not registered until Feb '91. Especially in a poor economic climate where the car companies "stockpile" in disused airfields and in some cases actual fields!!!

you are also allowed to make a car look older then it is by registration, but not newer. i.e. if i had a C plate car i could change it for a B plate.
