E30 Zone

Can anyone remember a black compact from santa pod last week? its got an m52 2.8 fitted from a 328i sport aparently, it also had the numbers b24 on his back window from santa pod. Just asking because he thought he said he did low 14's at the pod and was been quite cocky..but he got smoked on a standing quarter mile by my mtech1 last night in telford he disapeared after that! he also had big issues putting his power down, silly lad i told him he should of just bought a 328i sport

Yes I remember, his best I think was 14.1, I went against him a couple of times. No way a tech 1 would do anything near that.

Yes I went against it twice. Young lad IIRC. I think he was a bit hit and miss. First run against me, he did a 16.5 with a load of wheel spin, then he hooked it up and served me with a 14.38. Incidently this is much faster than a tech1!

Saw it running on the saturday too and was pretty fast, A tech1 would not touch it imo.

He did have a 316 open diff on the back Jon, hence the wheelspin!!

Yeah we have a top secret 1/4 mile strip in telford....on a private road
We took a video of it, the tech1 out accelarated it and was a cars length in front before it got to 60, il upload it in a bit.
i was quite surprised but ive run mid 6's to 60 in the past in the tech1 ive never officialy timed it on a 1/4 mile....its not a standard tech1 btw

What spec is the tech 1 then?

Nar not conclusive but i was impressed as he blitzed us on the motorway on the way back from brum last night, i think hes just got issues putting the power down. Im not 100% sure what the tech1 has got done to it, i was told by a previous owner on here that it was tuned by interpro in the 90's, he reconed it did 193bhp on the rollers . I know its got a bbr starchip and half a scorpion exhaust as far as i know thats it, if i end up keeping it il be taking it to a rolling road to see, its defanetly a lot faster than standard anyway

193 is optimistic. Mine with similar spec was 164! And mine is certainly no tired old turd.

It is a little optimistic considering its 23 now i beleive! The chip is mapable anyway so id likee to get a few things done then go get it all set up properly. I think its quick because of the lack of weight, everything is manual on it including the steering rack and they arent exactly heavy cars anyway
I was going to go to pod this year would of been interesting but looks like itl be next year now if im still a bmw owner

Would slow it down, M3 diff as Kos has is the best all round ratio

i had the same lad run up to me at santa pod and wanted to heads up with me and my compact. again as stated by the OP he was extreamly cocky and asked what i did on the 1/4 mile. i told him i did a 14.4, to which he replied " i've done a 14.1" in such a way he thought he and his car were the dogs B's.

so i now asked him what the car started life as, and he said it was a 316i............... my reply was, "oh ok, you still got the original diff in the car??" he replies "yes" to which i reply "ok , in that case you may get to 100mph about half a second before me and you top out at 110 mph which the car sreaming a 6500rpm i'll go past you in 4th gear and pull past you as i've got the legs to top 135mph"

he walked away after that

as dan has said the 3.25 ratio is the best all rounder, good accelaration and pulls a decent top end.

for a laugh i may just hook up my 3.64 LSD and take a trip up to the pod. with that diff in there i'll drop in to the 13's once my vanos issues are sorted and i add a few more trick bits like BBTB & ditching the cats. its currently at 216bhp and 205ft/lb torque, i know i'm missing 15-20 bhp. next stage is cams which will mean 245bhp if not more after mapping, thats pretty much what dans got.

any way as it is plenty for some fun on the road and useful on the track.

e36 diffs from thw saloons/coupes wont bolt up to the compact beam, but an e30 medium case diff will fit and there are enough ratios to find one that works well. if you can find a ration that works ( as stated in previous post 3.25 is the optimum but had to find) you can use an e36 328i's internals to build into an e30's diff

finaly the e30 diff which fits the compact still needs some minor tweeks to get it to fit properly and there are issues with output flanges and shafts and clearance issues with the floor pan. but nothing that cant be over come

Am I correct in thinkign the compact is actually heavier than the other varients of e36 also? I swear when I was looking at getting an old 3 seris to replace my 318i I read this in Parkers that the compacts were heavier and drank more than the saloon vertions.

looking at a compact you can see that it is phisicaly smaller than a regular e36, how do you get to the way of thinking its heavier than an e36 saloon??? a 318ti compact is about 120KG lighter than a 328i saloon. mine with a large case diff and m52 is still over 100kg lighter than a 328i, need to weigh it to see how much lighter it actually is.

what do you classify as an old 3 series which you wanted to replace your 318i with ? please use the e numbers to not confuse us like you have confused your self.

oh and a 318is e30 and 318ti e36 compact are the most fuel efficient variants of both cars you can buy apart for the e36 diesel versions

It doesnt make much difference anyway i cant see anyone buying it of here, know one seems to have the reddies, and i feel like its a waste of time tbh.

it wasnt exactly getting dogged was it? its no worse than you guys who went to pod, at least i only did one run and left it at that and didnt dog it all day. besides its a looked after car and could more than handle it.

I can see me keeping it anyway, could be fun to crack the 200bhp mark in it with an m52 of my own Everyone says its sacrilage to do it but why when know one is willing to cough up what its worth for a near standard original example.

Certainly someone elses loss and not mine.

It does get busy at the pad this time of year IIRC, I went a few years ago in october, turned up at about 10:30 - 11:00 AM and they were fully booked, spectator only

Kos , sorry for the late reply and the confussion I may have caused with my post.

It was when I had a e30 318i I was looking into getting a compact when I thought I read something about the weights. Due to it having the same rear end and extra strengthening the compact was actually a heavier car. Now this would have been 2002 when I would have been trying to find out about the compacts so hence I could have gotten it very wrong ( which it seems I have ).

Not much to get confussed about...just save your soul and never buy a compact

felix , yep you have got it worng, the regular e36 has the heavier suspension set up and an extra 9 inches of metal on the arse to carry

to the man above, nothing wrong with compacts ......

I actually like them , espacelly the 1.8ti sport. However this was when I was in my early 20's and I was physically in a much better state. For now the Alpina is more than enough to keep me going so another car not going to happen for a very long time.

Cheers for striaghtening that up for me. With my head filled with morphine all the time I tend to get things in a muddel ( also not being able to type for to save my life don't help ). I agree nout wrong with a nice compact. Also that engine is very sexy in there
